View Full Version : Custom Avatars - A new angle........

I have just installed the software and everything is working well except my custom avatars and signatures are not displaying. Smilies are ok and I can load pictures from Photobucket into posts.

Now I've gone into the database and there is a table for customavatars and the user images are there.

All User Group and Site Avatar permissons are as they should be (I think).

Looking at ftp I can see the customavatars file is located in my forums root directory. Images are being served from the database URL = customavatars

Any suggestions out there?

Annie

Can I bump this Thread yet? I've been sat here in me knickers for hours and it's getting cold! :(

I'm sure there's a simple explanation/tweek I need to do.

Waiting patiently..............honest! :o

What exactly is not working?

Custom Avatars and Profile pictures, I just get the red x and the property when I right click reads: - http://fatfannyscafe.com/forums//image.php?u=1&dateline=1192105568.

Site Avatars can be seen. I have read every thread on this and am sure all the settings in Admincp are correct. All I can think is there is a path wrong somewhere :confused:

Annie :D

p.s. Sorry Steve :o

What link is it you are looking for? Would you like me to pm you with login details?

Your site is apparently currently turned off in the AdminCP Options and no one, who is not an admin on your site, will be able to view anything internal, including images, while it is "off.". If you want someone to take a look, you will need to "turn it on." ;)

[EDIT] Problems with red "x" instead of the images are frequently a problem with the image path.

The site is www.fatfannyscafe.com (http://www.fatfannyscafe.com)

You say it is turned on but it is still displaying the "underconstruction" message box.

Check: AdminCP --> vBulletin Options --> Turn Your vBulletin On and Off

and make sure the radio button is set to "yes"

[EDIT] As an Admin, you can ALWAYS see the site, but when it is closed, you should see a "Forums Closed" warning at the top.

NOW it's open.

In which folder did you upload your avatar?

[EDIT] AdminCP--> Avatars --> Avatar File Path

should generally be: images/avatars

As it says in that listing: This file path should be readable AND writeable by your web server (usually chmod 0777)

Also check: AdminCP --> vBulletin Options --> User Picture Options

Use this option to enable/disable the overall use of avatars. yes

If this doesn't explain what's happening can you tell me exactly what you need to know?

Here's something else to check:

AdminCP --> Avatars --> User Picture Storage Type

when you click on that, it will open a box with the following information:

Avatar File Path

URL to avatars

Profile Picture Path

Signature Picture Path

URL to Signature Pictures

Of particular interest would be the first two. You can post them here.

Avatar Path file = ./customavatars

URL to Avatars = customavatars

slappy

And your customavatars are actually in the /forum/customavatars folder and and you spelled it correctly and that it is:

readable AND writeable by your web server (usually chmod 0777)

I noticed when I do a right click on one of your avatars and select properties, they are not listed as jpeg or gif files.

For example, the staff avatars shown here are listed as some variation of:

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/custompics/avatar/avatar19405_1.gif

Yours are listed as something like: image.php?u=3&dateline=1192091169 which generally means the correct path is not being found or is not readable.

The only other thing I can think of is the possibility that your skin is interfering with the avatars. Did you EVER have visible avatars and/or have you tried the default skin and determine whether they show there?

[EDIT] Last thing I can think of, checking in other Threads here on this subject, is to check to confirm you actually have your display of avatar turned on in your UserCP

The CHMOD is set to 777 and even in Default Avatars do not show. I'm so sorry to cause so much trouble but I've read everything I can and triple checked everything that I know of.

the sin I am using at the moment if one created by myself from Default but even in default it doesn't show.

In one of the threads on this issue, it was suggested to try reverting your postbit and postbit_legacy templates. Your's don't seem to be modified, but I don't think it would hurt anything and it might help.

[EDIT] You did not confirm that when you look at the images in the database with phpMyAdmin that they are actually listed as jpg and/or gif files.

Well I had to amend the postbit_legacy for the arcade but apart from that it hasn't been altered and yes the files in the table display .gif and .jpg

You didn't indicate whether avatars have ever worked, e.g. before you had an arcade installed, if there was such a time.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the arcade plug-in, although you said avatars did not work in the default template either. If you mention the brand of arcade you installed, maybe someone with experience with that software can help. The vbulletin staff won't help with that part, but maybe someone knows.

OK. A little more sleuthing has lead to the following discoveries.

On this forum, if you right click on an avatar, you get something like:

<td class="alt2"><a href="member.php?u=53022"><img src="custompics/avatar/avatar53022_1.gif" width="65" height="65" alt="-gio's Avatar" border="0" /></a></td>

You will notice that the img src is pointing to the vbulletin's /custompics/avatar/ folder to find: avatar53022_1.gif

On your board the results is:

<div class="smallfont">
&nbsp;<br /><a href="member.php?u=4"><img src="image.php?u=4&amp;dateline=1191957834" width="150" height="150" alt="Hot Cakes's Avatar" border="0" /></a>

Which is clearly missing the proper folder designation where the images are stored.

You indicated you edited the postbit_legacy template. The language it is supposed to contain for the avatar is:

<if condition="$show['avatar']">
<div class="smallfont">
&nbsp;<br /><a href="member.php?$session[sessionurl]u=$post[userid]"><img src="$post[avatarurl]" $post[avwidth] $post[avheight] alt="<phrase 1="$post[username]">$vbphrase[xs_avatar]</phrase>" border="0" /></a>

I am thinking you may have inadvertantly removed the $post[avatarurl]
part from your template. This would call the avatarurl listed in the AdminCP under:

AdminCP --> Avatars --> User Picture Storage Type

URL to avatars

which it obviously is not seeing correctly.

Check your postbit_legacy template and do a search for [avatarurl] and see if the complete language I listed above, from the default template is present. If it's not, do a search for avatar and you will get to this "if condition" clause.

Good morning,

I have done a search for $post[avwidth] and it appears in 2 templates and the code reads as follows...............

Postbit_legacy

<if condition="$show['avatar']">
<div class="smallfont">
&nbsp;<br /><a href="member.php?$session[sessionurl]u=$post[userid]"><img src="$post[avatarurl]" $post[avwidth] $post[avheight] alt="<phrase 1="$post[username]">$vbphrase[xs_avatar]</phrase>" border="0" /></a>

Postbit

<if condition="$show['avatar']"><td class="alt2"><a href="member.php?$session[sessionurl]u=$post[userid]"><img src="$post[avatarurl]" $post[avwidth] $post[avheight] alt="<phrase 1="$post[username]">$vbphrase[xs_avatar]</phrase>" border="0" /></a></td></if>
<td nowrap="nowrap">

Comparing to the example you gave I believe the first code is correct. As this issue is only with Custom Avatars I would expect there to be a different code relating to this? Site Avatars are working fine.

And just so you know I have looked at all my other templates and only the Navbar is in red other than the 2 above indicating it has been customise so everything else is standard.

I see you finally got them to work. I notice they are now being served from:

http://fatfannyscafe.com/forums/images/avatars/

What was the problem? Did it turn out that was where they were being uploaded or did you move them?

Regards,

The problem hasn't been resolved for Custom Avatars. What you see are Site Avatars which I have loaded for members until Custom Avatars are working.

I still very much need assistance on this one.

Yep! Not having that file would make it harder for "images" to work correctly. ;)

Glad you got it sorted out.
