Jake - i'll make it so that mods/admins are exempted from the limit

Essam - tricky one that... I'll look into it.

I believe there is a signature limiting hack in the hacks forum. I downloaded it, but haven't had the chance to install it yet. You may want to check there.

Thanks for adding this Kier, the last few days I've tried some of the signature hacks in 2.0.3 and while some of them work they don't really do a complete job.

I mean what's the point of limiting lines when you're not limiting characters or the other way around. You just know you will see signatures with with extra long lines to get around the limit, just because some people feel special when they break the rules or find a simple backdoor.

I'm hoping you will add both a line and character limit check.

A max-lines option is going to be rather trick... after all, how do you deal with word-wrapping?

if u make a combination (if its the right word) from word wrapping AND max signs, that was ok for me (i must arithmetic then how many i allowed, but i can do it i think ;))

and see, its not only my problem here :)

I understand you can't get around word wrapping, but if both line breaks and character count are checked there will be a limit of how long the printed signature will be.

Lets say you put a limit of 4 line breaks and limit of 300 characters, that way they can't use the 300 characters to make a signature that a page long (vertically) by using 20 line breaks and at the same time they can't really go over 4-5 actual printed lines by making 4 actual lines of 200 characters each for example.

That is where the current hacks come short in my oponion. What good does it do set a limit of 4 line breaks when they can (and will) use 4 rediculously long lines and you still end up having full screen signatures.

Well if vBulletin had an easy way to strip bbCode from a string i.e. stripbbcode($string), then it would be a simple matter of doing these kinds of checks.

However if you allow bbcode and smilies or images in your signatures then you can't do a combination of these. Checking by lines is easy because you have something to go on and can easily split the text up. Checking by "visible" characters, because that is all anyone really cares about, is hard when you allow formatting.

So it is more than just a simple line count or character count.

hey, its your job to solve problems like that ;)

ok, if u can find a solution, that would be very kewl, its really a big problem for, i think, the most boardadmins

I have already suggested it to the Developers. About as far as I go in solving it in the main code. I am not a developer.

I'd also love to see this type of function in a future version of vB. Keep up the excellent work, guys.

I still can't believe I put up with UBB for so long when vB existed. What WAS I thinking?!

*bump*

Did the signature limit get added in yet ? If not, is there a hack for v2.2.0?

No it's not in, and you'll need to go to http://www.vbulletin.org to check for hacks.
