A member on my forum asked me that. How are active members defined?

Active members is determined from this setting:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Forums Home Page Options -> Active Members Time Cut-Off

I'm a little confused by the description in the ACP.

A member is considered 'active' if they have visited the board within the number of days specified in 'Active Members Time Cut-Off'.

How does the script know that a registered member has "visited" the board? Or does the description really mean "logged in" to the board? I presume the latter is the case.

I mean, I can be a member of vB. Then visit the board on a daily basis, yet never log in. How does the board know that I (pk698) has visited the board (if I don't log in)? IP address?

Yes, he has to be logged in for it to count as a visit.
