View Full Version : Efficient board scanning

Am curious as to what technique people use to efficiently scan their boards for new posts.
Since there's no flag that positively identifies what one has read, it seems I'm constantly scanning top-to-bottom and wondering if that last timestamp was before or after my last scan from top to bottom.
There's got to be a better way. I'm all ears.

what i do on vB forums like this one
1. First stop http://vbulletin.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=getdaily
lists all new and replied threads for the day.
2. each thread i am interested in i open in a new window and read them if they're worth replying to i reply if not i close that new window
3. then i browse each forum for anything i missed

I put up two these links on my site's forums:
http://www.opentechsupport.net/canislupus/images/latesttopics.jpg
The first link is "&action=getnew" while the second one is "&action=getdaily" ... when they're not logged in (guests), they will only see the "&action=getdaily" link ...

Can you set '&action=getnew' function to an individual forum or will it only search all forums?

getnew will search all forums.... but yes you can easily hack search.php to include a new function to search a certain forum or group of forums.
