Should the various blogs have a structure to them ?
I see a blogger can make categories for their posts *WITHIN* their blog, but shouldn't that same functionality be applied to an entire forum's blogs ?
Realistically I dont want to read most blogs, I might benefit from finding the blogs that are under categories I am interested.
Surprised vBlogs doesnt have this.

Freddie,
Just checking in to confirm that "admin defineable" means not only allowing an admin to set up global categories, but also the ability to define who can post in a given category.
For example -- I would ideally like to be able to have a category called "featured" where I could assign a certain usergroup (or just specific users) access. Then I could pull a feed based on "featured" that I could use as dynamic content for the main page of my vB or my main site.
Hope that makes sense.

I can envision allowing categories to have permissions for who can post to them but I don't see permissions for who can view which categories.

Agreed. I'm most concerned about being able to limit access to certain categories for postings.

Which major release would this be? I just upgraded to a newer version and it wasn't in there as far as I could see.
Also, once the categorizing functionality is added there should be a quick and easy way on the front end to then move all existing blogs to those new admin-defined categories.

The latest release is not a major release, but a maintenance release.

Ok, this is kinda off topic kinda not.... I purchased the vB Blog not too long ago and am just now getting a chance to really play with it... I have it on a private forum right now until I learn and understand it completely. Figured the best way to do that was just to jump right in and start using/managing my own. Anyways, my question is about the Categoies...
When you create a new Cat, I understand that it's yours meaning no one else has them, they make their own and everyone has a list of their own Categories? Is that Right? And then there's more features planned as discussed in this thread?
This is probablya silly question but I couldn't find the answer on the board and the Manual for the Blog System is not as advanced as the one for vBulletin (all the answers for install but not very explanatory as far as features go unless I am looking in wrong place)...
I love this thing so far, I just gotta learn how to use it correctly is all =0)
Thanks in advance!
Always -Bree
UPDATE: I am guessing I have that all correct after playing with the Blog Control Panel here *blush*

Yesterday I realized how right those people are who want categories setup by the admin. I have 4 main subjects on my site and all people on my site can be categorized into those 4 subjects. So I want those 4 catergories to be shown on the BlogOverview (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/blog.php), just like InfoNirvana is suggesting.
Here (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=274922) we can read :
Categories
As an admin, you can now create categories that are accessible to all users or can be limited to specific usergroups.
I wonder how it will look on the overview? Do we get an extra column with the category mentioned there? Or do we get fancy [Tabs] ?

Yes, this is an important feature and should be extremely flexible in terms of permissions. I am assuming that once an admin creates categories, members somehow have the option to put their posts within those categories? I am assuming that it would be in the Post to my Blog page. But there has to be a clear differentiation between the categories that the member sets vs. the ones that the admin sets. Also, you may only want certain users to only post in one specific category, so there should be usergroup or individual permissions (preferable) for that.
And how do group blogs fit into all this?
Thanks,
Marcos
P.S. - I am dying for this to come out! Please be soon :)!

Group, or admin controlled top level categories are also what I've been waiting for before I can even consider implementing VB blog. User specified categories are great in theory, but in reality you end up with a giant mess as each blogger creates categories according to their own mindset that make it more difficult, not easier, to get to the actual entry the viewer wants.

Well, I think you need both. There may be posts that simply do not fit into the categories that an admin sets, so they should be able to create their own. However, those should stay on their own individual blog as they do now and then the Admin ones show up on both (just thought about that). So I guess the admin ones show up in a module on the main page and in the users blog page (designated by some type of wording like "community categories") while the member generated categories are below this admin category module only in their own blog page.

Well, I certainly don't mind having both, but as is I can't even use VB Blog based on the fact that it doesn't support admin specified categories. I could if it didn't support user specified categories but the aforementioned.

Agreed. I am in the same position. We have been waiting a month since the blog development updated. If they provide an update, I wish it would be closer to the release date. :)

Exactly my thoughts.
