Any way to enter a blog entry for a date earlier than today?

Does this capability exist in the UI? I had to go and change the database columns manually to migrate over some entries from my old blog and it wasn't very pleasant :-)

There is no way to do this except as you did - manually editing the database.

Yes, you can choose a past date when creating an entry and you can edit an existing entry and change to a older date as well. Just look at the "Publish On" option using the small calendar popup.
