Can we set categories for blog entries to go in and further restrict who can and can't post in them via usergroup permissions?

No, each user can set up his/her own blog categories.

Any chance you can move this to suggestions then Colin?
I can't use the blog until that feature is added on any of my main sites (so that's 4 licences you could have had).
I need to control where entries are posted for a number of reasons, main one being I want to be able to seperate site-topic entries and off-topic ones, and the other is where I might want an official site blog. Many admins will feel the same when their site content begins to get diluted with off-topic postings... going against one of the main benefits of having a topic-specific fourm.
I think I have already posted this in the original suggestions thread too. If you guys have no plans to bring this feature in please let me know and I'll buy one of the alternative hacks.

That looks kinda like a blackmail... :/

Don't be so ridiculous - it's a must have feature for me so if the vb Blog won't get it what other choice do I have?
I was able to wait a little while (hence waited thus far) as I already have the feature on my own custom vb blog - but would like to use a commercial script instead at some point because they are easier for upgrades, feature additions etc.

I understand you point, but it still sounds bad the way you said it.

Well crap this is what is stopping me from buying it as well. I would like it to where only the admin can set categories and users must choose what category to put their blog post in from already pre-defined categories. Weird that it is not already done this way as most other blog software is. Otherwise you end up with possibly thousands of categories which have been created by users, most with probably the same category but different spellings. I can see it getting real messy real quick.
Hopefully they will make this an option soon. Until then I guess I will have to wait as well or go with some other software which is not what I want to do.

I like the fact that users can define catagories but I also believe that admins should be able to define universal cataragories for the reasons Razasharp stated.
I am hoping a hack will be released for this.

I agree, the option to do both would be great!

The option to do both will be great, good news. Now, do I wait to release this for when I can set categories or unleash it and probably end up with a "messier" blog section? Hmmm....
Next major release - I assume this could be quite a while...?
Oh yeh, one other thing : if admin created categories are allowed, I would think setting a default should be an option, which the user could change of course.

I will also wait to see this feature integrated before installing the blog module.
I think it will be a great addition and will make navigation easier for visitors (ex: easily find all blogs entries related to a music category).

Public categories is what caused me to back out of vB's version. The ability for users to associate their blogs to public categories and then allowing people to view blogs in those categories is a must-have feature for us. Until then, we'll stick with our homegrown version.
Looking forward to the "next major update".

I hate to press for release dates, but any ideas when we might get this Freddie? Likely to be by the end of this year or not?
I'll be needing a blog script for one of my sites soon (the other sites can wait), and I really really would like to use the vB one - but I really need the admin set-able categories :o
