project tools icon?

Is there any way to have the project tools icon change colors when there is a new post in the project tools system? I was thinking something like a forum has where it turns red when a new post or thread is posted. My members see the project tools system, they just do not look at it because there is no visiual Icon to tell them issues have been responded to or updated.

We don't track which issues were read, so there's no way to recognize if there are unread issues or not.

I will have to come up with another work around then, at least I know its not me.
