Hey All,

This will be my first time upgrading after making lots of edits to the templates within the vbCP and I am a bit confused on a few things.

When I upgrade, do I have to revert all my templates or can I upgrade and still keep my templates edits intact/?

I guess I am trying to figure out the easiest way to keep all my template edits while upgrading or the easiest way to keep trak of them, then remake them in the new templates?

Thanks,

Marcos

Check the appropriate Announcements for each version since yours. Any templates marked as a 'mandatiory' revert will need to be reverted. You can then redo your changes.

Thanks for the quick reply Steve! I saw the 'mandatiory' template change in the announcement. So just to be clear you are saying that this is the only template that needs to be reverted and then manually changed while all the others I can keep as they are and when I upgrade all the template from the new release all my template modifications will stay the same?

Thanks,

Marcos

If yyou are upgradng from 3.6.7 then SHOWTHREAD is the only templates that is mandatory to change.

FWIW I updated all my templates with each version.

This is actually pretty exciting news because I thought for each version you have to revert all templates and then make all the changes again in the new templates that were uploaded.

So is it that the templates uploaded to our server stay the same and are not changes directly when we make changes in the AdminCP? In other words, are template changes stored in the database and then "interact" with the original templates to create the modifications that show up on the forum? And because there is sometimes a major modification in a template, say in this case the SHOWTHREAD, the modifications could create major errors and that is why they need to be reverted?

Thanks for answering this. I think this info could be a good reference for others upgrading!

Hello,

I read some more of the manual and have a few more questions before upgrading. So I know that when I upgrade, the templates that I have modified will not be altered or overwritten by importing the latest style. If I want to keep all the modifications I made in my templates but also upgrade these templates, it seems the best step is to “click on the [Edit Template] link for each template, in the Styles & Templates > Find Updated Templates (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/../docs/html/main/style_findupdates) and compare the contents of the customized template with the latest version available by clicking the [View Original] in order to manually update the customized templates to reflect the changes made in the new default templates.? So does this mean that I would be keeping my older, modified template and then have the opportunity to update it by integrating the newer modifications from the new version into the older one?

Thanks,

Marcos

Yes, you can do it that way. Depending on how modified your template is, it may be easier to revert the template then reapply your changes.
