i don't like the search in navbar

there are now 3 form's
i think it would be nicer if there would be one text input and then you select per radio options where you want to search
and ONE CENTRAL SEARCH site would be great and not 3 or more
because: if you have installed projectt. & blog & the linklist you would have now 4 searchforms and maybe 4 quick search forms in navbar...
in my eyes not very nice
so my idee=> one textinput and radiooptions

second idee:one searchsite for all things

Chances are the developers may not see it. We went from 6 blogs to over 50 on this site in just a few hours with everyone testing it out. Put your bugs in Project Tools where they belong and your suggestions in the suggestion forum where they belong at this time.

With regards to moderated comments - how about showing them to the person who posted them but not everyone else (until they are approved)? Use log-in or cookie sessions to work it. I know a few sites that do this.

A step further is to require email address on guest comments (not shown to blog owner, just site owner) and include another option that the blog owner can 'approve this user for comments' so their comments are automatically approved or their name added to an approved list. Same with any registered users, blog owners can add them to a list that by-passes the moderation stage...

This is actually very useful for the busier blogs out there.

(If any of the vB team wants to see a site that does this pm me for the url)

I realize this is early beta and more features and changes are yet to come, but thus far, I'm woefully unimpressed. I pray that the social networking aspect is better and has some ground breaking functionality otherwise this will end up doing little more than gathering dust on most forums.

In a day and age when our members have the choice of a billion different blogging platforms, I just can't see me purchasing this one especially when the blogging platforms being put out by vbadvanced.com and vblogetin.com are far superior at present.

I don't know. I find this one better, cleaner and easier to use than vblogetin or vblogicles (I have both licenses).
Plus it is supported by the official vbulletin developers which means frequent updates, bug and security fixes and that nobody is going to bail on us after you cash out your 50 (or whatever) bucks leaving you with an unsupported and sometimes unfinished product.

Blog is perfect for now! But I would pay 4x for it if it would have Tags.

Why not make two different products as each of them could be stand alone products? It would fit more in your new strategie having multiple addons rather than one big product.

Here is a few important (imo) suggestions for SN part of the product:

- A simple Photo Gallery within a user's profile where users can comment on each other's photos.

- Option to completely get rid of the avatars and use profile pictures (normal and small size for blog, postbits etc...ie replacing avatars with smaller images of profile pics). I think this is crucial for Social Networking. I already have this implemented on my site, thanks to custom coding :)

- Enhanced online.php page, where members can be sorted by their profile field input (gender/city/country from etc).

Great suggestions! But this thread is about blog part. This reminds me some more time, that both products (Blog and SNS) are separate products and should be developed and sold separately. They have even be developed separately until now AFAIK (first blog, then SNS). Would be make much things more easier.

Spam Prevention In order to reduce the amount of spam on your blog the administrator has provided the option to provide an Akismet key.
Wordpress API Key:
I don't understand this and I know my members won't either, please explain? (and make clearer in the blog itself)

Those who have a Wordpress blog will understand.
Akismet is a great anti-spam feature for blogs. If you have a Wordpress blog, and have the Akismet anti-spam feature activated, you can use the same API key that you use for your Wordpress blog, for this blog.

I like it :)

I am using Vista right now and it hasn't caused a single problem on a vBulletin based site. The OS is not the browser anyway. The people reporting the problems above are most likely running small browser windows of 800 X 600 or better. The blog works fine in a 1024 X 900 browser window (what mine is set to).

Question -

being a vB forum skin designer, I'm naturally interested in this -

1 - Does the vB Blog have the capability of being skinned separate from the forum skin?

2 - Will each blogger be able to choose from available skins for their own blog?

3 - Or do the blogs automatically take on the forums' default (whichever one that may be) skin?

The blogs use current classes that vBulletin uses but also adds couple new classes. You can customize it from templates. My templates are ready (http://www.ayyas.com/blogs/lizard-king/) :P I am just waiting to install the system :P

Is it possible for each user to customize a CSS for his blog?
In some of the discussion, it was said that users will not be able to pick a style or CSS for their own blog. This seems like a huge limitation to me.

I think within 5 minutes of the release of Blog 1.0.0, there will be a mod allowing users to select a "Display Style" for their Blog.

Then I think we will quickly see dozens of Blog-centric styles released for vBulletin over at vBulletin.org that are technically vB styles but are only seen and used on Blogs. I foresee dozens of "plain jane" vBulletin styles with just color scheme changes.

By the way, the postbit link ought to be "View Username's Blog".

Nice, Will this blog be able to add media like ".mpg | .wmv | .mp3 | .swf" files as I cannot with the vBulletin forum without using hacks which I dont want to do.
You can attach and link them no problem, but embedding them so they play within the page will probably be the same as vBulletin forums, requiring a hack. Maybe with the social networking, they will make an exception to add parity with MySpace. ;)

I don't understand this and I know my members won't either, please explain? (and make clearer in the blog itself)

Exactly. Sometimes I have the feeling that things could be more looked at from a USER point of view when developing vBulletin. For instance I don't understand why there is inline help for us admins in the ACP, but there is NO inline help for our users (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=149044) in their UserCP.

Wordpress API Key? Never heard of it, and I am sure most of my (dutch)boardmembers also do not know what it is. Things like these need an explanation really. So please add more information about this in the Blog Options indeed.

I agree they should be small but something about them doesn't look right, they look grainy or something...

I rather like them as is. Less space taken up in that area means more posting/commenting room :)
The real problem is that most members' avatars are of poor quality when viewed that small. Ohiosweetheart's avatar is well done, but you can't even come close to reading the words on hers - and it won't be much better a slightly larger sizes. I'd like to see something like a "choose blog icon" feature instead of using a miniature version of the avatar.

i don't like the search in navbar

there are now 3 form's
i think it would be nicer if there would be one text input and then you select per radio options where you want to search
and ONE CENTRAL SEARCH site would be great and not 3 or more
because: if you have installed projectt. & blog & the linklist you would have now 4 searchforms and maybe 4 quick search forms in navbar...
in my eyes not very nice
so my idee=> one textinput and radiooptions

Agree 100%.

The search results page could be broken down into sections. It would allow allow for future vb product results and 3rd party add-ons.

If you want to kill the server, ya... do a full-search in all search tables. :)
Please don't forget that some have busy forums where searches are performed thousands of times daily.
MySQL Falcon will have Sphinx built in (let's prey it will happen)... until then, is better to keep the searches separated. Even for the mighty Sphinx, it's easier to deal with several smaller searches then one huge search.

Good move on the search decission/table design, guys.

Are you going to install Sphinx for them? :)
Sphinx is not a user friendly setup. You really need to know what you do, plus is not a vBulletin issue, is an user issue.
If the user wants to use Sphinx and improve the performance of their forum search, good, all he/she has to do is implement it.
And most boards will not have serious problems with the search because they don't have the traffic.

I am aware of how hard to implement sphinx on the server. Without that the requested search will kill the servers. That's why i suggested without sphinx everything shall be seperated. Even with sphinx a busy board can come to its knees with tens of full table search requests.

Let me clarify -- my original idea wasn't to do full table searches on every table that can be searched.

My site will have:
- Forum Search
- vbGallery Search
- Blog Search
- Projects Search

In the advanced search, let the users select which products they want to search in. It wouldn't be one HUGE search, just 4 individual searchs listing the results in 4 areas on the same page. Server wise, it would be the same as if the customer ran the same search 4 times on thier own but this would be cosmetically transparent to them.

For items like "new posts / new threads / new blog entries / new gallery pics / new whatever" -- how are they handled today? Query them every five minutes (if activity on the site) and toss the results into the data cache for everyone to use.

You can add up to three email addresses to your priority support page. You could ask your staff to register and add their email to this list on a temporary basis. They will ten show as licensed on the forum, but won't have access to your customer account.

I hope blog information can be imported from a CSV file. I have entries in the old journal hack that I'd like to import to the vb-blog in this way.

Also -- I think we will need a script to let us know if there are any database conflicts. Like if the vb-blog wants to add a table or field thats already in existance, it could let us know and offer the option of renaming it. (shouldnt be hard to code that... I may do that myself once the blog is available for download).

I like the user friendlyness. I would strongly suggest a blogs front page portal maybe? So when members click on blogs they see all the other blogs in a list and maybe a few blocks of other users blogs showing up as avatars.

Currently it does this, but its only in a form of a few lines and text, just a suggestion.. pretty good so far.

Here is what I seek in Blog features:

Categories feature!

I see that each blog has ability to create its own categories, but how to filter those blog entries by categories?
Lets say I only want to check tech categories and I am not interested in other blogs. How do I filter them?
There should be overall category system I think.

domain/blog

and not

domain/forum/blog
If it's not, it can be done very easy with a directory option in Admin CP.
Just request it in the blog features thread. :)

PS. IMO, this is a very important option.

Humm, besides de fix that will be needed in order not do destroy the layout when pictures are posted (already reported) (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/project.php?issueid=22475) i'd suggest that blogs could be rated, not only blog entries, I was not able to rate for instance a blog owned by a user

also the blog listing should start with best blogs and maybe not last posts, since it can show up a lot of mess, as it is showing now with all test posts here in vb :D altough it would make sense to list the last posts also :S

It doesn't even look like a blog.

This is a blog
http://cutline.tubetorial.com/

and this
http://www.johnchow.com/

and this
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/

Those are blogs. This is some frankenstein vb thing.

Is it possible to theme it outside the vB forum navbnar, breadcrumbs and header bits? Because it doesn't look like a blog. We already have these type of kludge solutions in vBlogetin and Blogicicles.

Is it just me, or is the autodiscovered RSS on blog pages, just the forum RSS?

And still no comments RSS?

It's never going to look like those blogs. Those are stand-alone blog scripts. This is vB Blog - coded by vB developers, powered by vB, designed by vB - of course it's going to look like, or at least have similarities to vB. You're not going to get around that.

Okay, I'm coming in late to the discussion but I have to say, I like it.

I hope we will be able to skin it with themes we've made.

I also hope there will be a way to search for blog entries by member name...right now it's a pain. Just wading thru ALL entries gets very tiring. There needs to be a way to put each member's entires under their name and then list the names alphabetically.

Ok, but it's not a blog.

It's a MySpace esque addon for vB.

I mistakenly thought a serious publishing platform was being built.

Nobody said anything about serious publishing platform. It was originally announced that vblog and social networking tools will be developed as an add-on to vbulletn. Ofcourse it will (and it should) look like vbulletin.

I can tell you one thing, it will not be free. :)
Since Project Tool's price is $50 I would assume
the blog will cost somewhere around that, perhaps even more expensive since there is a lot more work being put into it. (the sns and the blog part)

Or just have all products having the same price. Blog could cost 50 $ and SNS would cost 50 $, too. But they are both worth multiple times than that. I'd also buy them if they would cost several hundred $$$.

SHHH! If you have a hole in your pocket I'm sure there are many less fortunate that would be thrilled to be given a Blog gift certificate. ;)

If vB really does come up with a stellar product, the price should be reflective of volume anticipated sold.
Obviously if the Blog addon integrates well with the forum software, more of these will also be sold.

However price may now be dependent on what the 'new company' feels is the 'bottom line'.
For sure, acquisition costs and new overheads may affect the pricing structure for addons.

It is a blog and a social networking add-on. Or it will be when they're finished with it. Geezes this is just a first public beta. They're looking at, and implementing, I'm sure, feature requests from the feature request thread. One of my requests is already being worked on, so I know they're reading and listening to us.

If you think it's lacking, make some suggestions there!

MJM
Sun 8th Jul '07, 10:59am
I would suggest that anyone who is seriously interested in the Blogs development to make some time to read and add any other suggestions to this vBulletin Blog: Feature Request List Thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=234079)

This addon has the potential of being used in many more ways then the developers may have ever envisioned, so it's up us site owners to express how we would like to use it.

Who knows, we may be on the threshold of a refreshingly new era because of these innovative tools that vB is providing for us.
However we can't expect the developers alone to lead the way. It's up to us users (in particular, administrative leaders) to address the issues and seek practical solutions.

The clock is ticking, and time is running out. The Beta is around the corner, and now is your last chance to have a say before hardcoded stuff can no longer be undone.

Drumroll ... ;)

Things they can no longer change after the Beta is officially released because it could cause a ripple down affect on other coding components, potentially forcing them to start over again from scratch ... which they will have no interest in doing.

edit ... Wow' it's in my dictionary:
hardcoded
adj. 1. [common] Said of data inserted directly into a program, where it cannot be easily modified

At the risk of appearing rude (not difficult for me these days), would the next person who replies to ask a question please use the "Search this thread" feature at the top of the page first? This topic is already 16 pages and could be less if the same questions weren't asked several times. You should read the whole topic, but you don't even need to do that if you just use the technology available before asking your question.

... I don't know if one could technically call this a public beta as they are still putting all the parts and pieces together, and have been so very kind as to give us a pre-view /trial run in order to get feedback and troubleshoot any existing or potential problems.

In this respect, kudos to vB for including us customers in the pre beta development process. :)

Has anyone noticed the blog entries in postbit now have a link?

Mon 9th Jul '07, 3:02pm
I have been playing around with the blog system and I have come up with some ideas comments and some generalizations. Please do not take anything I am about to say wrong because I am still playing around with this blog system and it could be because I do not understand it well enough yet. I did not see any help files anywhere yet. This is some of the things I have come up withs so far.

Blog listing order ascending or descending:
I would like to see it so that I could set the blogs in the order I want them to display in. I would like to see the option so that the blogger or the admin could change the order from ascending or descending at there choice.
I see a lot more I would like to see done, but I am only writing this stuff that I am writing now to test this lame system.

Multiple blogs:
I would like the option so users could have multiple blogs. That might get me to think about this, but there is still a lot more that would need to get done for me to think about it.

Blog displayling order:
Another nice option would be if we could have the blogs listing link the membership list is listed. This way everyone that has a blog will be listed in order of there user name.
Another alternate listing would be listing the blogs by user name in the order of the last one that had...

Categories:
I just created a category and don't understand the idea behind having it. It was not what I thought it would be. All I see is that it puts the category name on the bottom left side on the blog entry.
Seems kind of stupid, but I may be missing something here. I will have to play with it some more.

Displaying user categories in a module:
It would be nice if when you click on View all blog entries by attroll that it would list all the categories that the user created in a module on the right column and then you could click on the category to read all the entries under that category.

Draft confusing:
I created a save to draft test prior to this post and it did save to my drafts but I could not figure out how to save it to my blog and remove it from the drafts section. I ended up having to delete it from my drafts. Maybe I am missing something here. I think some better thought or a button needs to be added to the drafts folder that will allow you to move it from the drafts and into your blog.

What is this permalink:
What the heck is this Permalink under the title to my blog entry. It brings me to that blog entry but is that all it is suppose to do? You can do that by clicking on the title, so what have this also?
Here is what I am referring to:

Most of your post belongs in the suggestion forum.

We're working on stabilising out it currently with some mass testing here on vbulletin.com, then we'll go into a private beta period and let people break it some more finally followed by a general release.

We've not got any timeframes for the public release but we're hoping to start the private beta real soon(™)

Great looking feature. I can't wait to try it out on my forums.

That's because there must be a setting "how many ratings are needed to show the rating publicaly".

I think blog publishers should be able to delete their blog entries, with a delete button next to the edit/report/etc button... My guess is this wasn't implemented yet?

Also my question still stands, how does the Best Blogs work? With blog entries ratings?
