It seems to log me back in every time I stay idle for a few minutes.
Is this going to affect such things as the "view new posts" thing on the main page and possibly the link to "new posts" at the top of topics (I'm not sure how this function works).

hm..... never experienced that, but I don't think that would pose a problem

You have got to stay idle for 5 minutes or more before the new posts selection is reset.

I'm running into this a lot.

Why does the cookie reset so quickly? As I'm reading the posts I might take a few minutes to answer the phone or something. When I come back, everything's been read.

This defeats the 'new posts' feature for me, and I'm sure others.

I believe John had said that it will be included as an option you can define the length of time on, in the next release.

This is a real pain for me.

I stop in every couple of days, ready to dive into the new posts.

Uh oh. The phone rings....

I return 15 minutes later and there are no NEW posts.

If possible, can the default be set to "new browser instance" instead of a timed cookie? And perhaps an expert option of different settings.

I would think a majority of users would just expect it to not reset itself until the browser was shut down.
