to revert or not to revert

I'm sure there have been question similair like mine, but I couldn't find the answer.

But I am planning to upgrade my forum from 3.5.4 to 3.6.5.
I've done a testrun, and all went perfectly well, and everything (seems) to work as well. But in my admincp there is the message that I have to revert 30 templates or so. If I do the style I used in 3.5.4 go's bad.

Like I said, as of jet, everything seems to work perfectly even with the old style installed.

Is it an absolute necessity to revert the templates? Or will the new forum work with the old style?

If you want to gain 3.6.x's features and functionality it is often easier to revert and recustomize your templates than it is to try to backport 3.6.x's changes. If it is a commercial style, check with the vendor to see if they have an updated 3.6.5 version.
