unfortunately after a parting of the ways with the previous owner of the site i now run we need to purchase a new owned licence and then upgrade to 3.6.5. Becasue we currently have a valid owned licence how do we get the VB software to recognise the new licence, if i remember right when you run the upgrade script the first thing you do is enter the customer number. As I'll effectively have two customer numbers - the old and a new one, which do I put in?
if i download the new 3.6.5 files and follow the upgrade path will this cause issues with the licence and customer numbers held in our current forum?
suggestions greatly appreciated.

If you have a new customer and license, you'll need to upload the licensed files for that account to your server overwriting the existing old file. Then use the new customer number to enter the upgrade.

The vBulletin files are associated with your license number. To be sure you are using the correct files, you need to download the vBulletin package from your Members' Area (http://members.vbulletin.com) and upload them to your server.

ok said it was daft....
so basically goto my new customer number members area, download the 3.5.3 files and load those into the server, overwriting what is currently there, then download the 3.6.5 upgrade files and follow those instruction?

You only need to download the 3.6.5 files and run the upgrade script. The upgrade instructions (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/upgrade) are in the online manual.
