View Full Version : Tips for taking a 2.9 forum to the current version?

I'm running a site with 2.X on a dedicated box that is running a non-current version of php. I've been holding back on upgrading the php for fear of backwards compatibility issues with my older vB version. And now, there are enough really nice stock vB features that I'd like to make the move.
I want to take the steps required to take the php on the box and the vB to their current states. Is there a logical order to upgrading to make this work moderately smoothly?
I was looking through the 3.6 upgrade tutorial and understandably it doesn't look like it contains info on taking a very old site up to the current version.

What are the exact PHP, MySQL and vB versions?

You should have no problem directly upgrading to 3.6.5 with those versions. Personally I would upgrade vB before upgrading PHP.

Thanks, Steve. Do you anticipate me having any issues with the newer vB being incompatible with the older version php? My thought is I'm wondering if I'll have any issues testing the new version without the php being current.
One other question - will the new version change the URL's of existing threads? I'd like to look into mod rewrite rules beforehand if that's the case.
Thanks for your help. :)

That version of PHP will be fine with vB 3.6.5.
Upgrading will not affect the existing thread URLs.

Excellent - As always, timely and helpful.
Thanks, Steve.

Turns out I had one more question -
With my old license (I also have a newer license that I've never used), am I eligible for the $30 member access renewal, or do I need to buy a new license?

If it's an owned license then you can renew it for $30.

Thanks. Last question (for now). I couldn’t find a link in the pricing/buy page for the renewal option. Where do I initiate that process?

Just click on the 'Upgrade/Renew' link under License Options in the Members Area.
