View Full Version : Purchasing and Colocating your server?

I'm looking to cut back on my monthly recurring charges for hosting and I am thinking of buying a new server and having it colocated with my host.
I'm curious to see if anyone else is doing this... if you are, i'd like to hear about your experiences thus far and how much your monthly recurring charges are.
Thanks :)

I think you will find that co-location will not provide you with any significant savings until you have multiple (5+) servers to co-locate, and even then savings will be minimal.
Many people co-locate to have more control over their environment and hardware, but not necessarily to save money. Not only will the monthly be high due to increased bandwidth costs that are generally associated with co-location (as there tends to be less "overselling" in this market sect. than say in dedicated servers where multiple TBs of transfer is commonplace), but you will also be incurring the initial cost of hardware and the responsibility to maintain spare parts in the case of failure.
Unless you are looking to build a really high-end server, where there will be more overall savings on the recurring cost, co-location is really not worth it for a single box.
