Back in the day when the vBulletin community was hosted with Ventures Online, I went with a VPS with Ventures from 2002-2004. Then for the past couple years I’ve had the following plan with Data393 (who merged with VO) for $59.95 a month.

· 5 GB Disk Space
· 256 MB Guaranteed RAM (512 or higher would be better)
· 300 GB Bandwidth

Data393 wants about $75 to update my account to the newer versions of PHP and MySQL that vBulletin now requires. It also seems like there are some cheaper VPS options out there now than the $60 a month I’m currently paying. I’ve been happy with Data393, I’m just wondering if I could do better for the money.

I definitely would like a Plesk control panel as it’s the easiest option I’ve ever worked with over the years. Larger storage, bandwidth and streaming capabilities from the server would be a plus. I also need to support multiple domains (at least two).

I’m considering Lunarpages (www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/ (http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/)) for $39.95 a month, but I don’t know the processor or RAM allotments on their VPS machines. I’d be very interested in hearing from other Lunarpages customers or satisfied VPS owners with other hosts concerning your recommendations especially with a medium-sized to large vBulletin forum.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm also trying to find out what version of PHP and MySQL is installed on a new VPS plan with Lunarpages. Hopefully, they meet the minimum requirements for vBulletin 3.6.x.

Lunarpages says a maximum of 512 mb RAM. I guess that is the burstable, assured ram should be 384 MB. I would recommend atleast 512 MB assured ram for VPS. Lunarpages is a good host, but they don't seem to have much upgrade option for VPS.

With xen, you can go in and change ram on the fly as long as you have available ram on the server. Cost of that php and mysql upgrade is BS, you need to look elsewhere.
