View Full Version : Shared hosts with fast MySQL servers?

I run a mid-size forum (maybe small???)... about 350 users currently, about 10 users online at peak times, sometimes 15 or 20 tops. Currently theres 28,000 posts and 2500 threads.

I just switched from phpBB to vB3.6.5. My old host, ExpertHost.com, wasn't bad, but phpBB has this weird thing where the database gets really really huge really really fast because of the way it indexes the search. Anytime the database got over, say, 65mb or so, the forum would slow down to a crawl anytime you tried to post something or edit a post. You could browse the forum quickly but posting and editing was a pain in the butt.

A few days ago I switched from ExpertHost.com to ************.com, because I signed up a friend of mine's site who I manage there n I liked them, it was quick and easy to manage. I switched from phpBB to vB3.6.5 n from day 1 it was killing me how slow the mySQL server was. The forum is now even slower than my phpBB forum was on ExpertHost n it's driving me crazy. Sometimes you click a link n it's fast, snap bang page displayed, wonderful. But about 90% of the time I'm waiting 20 seconds or more for even the forum index to load, or people complain about being in "internet limbo" because their new forum post just dead ends in a white screen.

I really don't wanna spend ridiculous amounts of money on hosting when I know that other people are quite successfully hosting forums bigger than mine on shared hosting. I figure if it's maybe $10 or $15/month I'll leave my other 7 domains with ************.com and just have a seperate host specifically for my forum, unless the other host is spectacular and offers everything else I need.

So here's my question. Where do I find a good host with a fast mySQL server to host this for me? I've been out of the hosting game for 9 years now n I don't know who's a reseller or who's good or who's bad or who's fast n who's slow etc. I looked at DreamHost.com because someone mentioned them in another thread, but they don't have a dedicated IP address and a stupid $50 setup fee unless I prepay for a year of hosting.

Sorry for the long post, but I notice that half of the threads on this section of the forum don't offer me the info I'm looking for simply because the original poster didn't do a very good job at being thorough in their question, I figure the more background you have on my situation the better the response will be, assuming I didn't put you to sleep ;)

To be fast is the rule, if it's slow, probably is because they have their servers overloaded, coming from ************ is not something that does surprise me.

I suggest you to take a look to whreviews.com where you will be able to see a list of honest hosts based on independent reviews at WHT.

I have my vBulletin forum, with a fair amount more traffic than the original poster, on DreamHost, and the MySQL performance is quite good.

I also have two WordPress databases, and two MyBB forums as well, for sites with lesser traffic that don't justify the investment in a commercial product -- at least not yet.

So I have a fair amount of experience, or at least close to 3 months worth. In addition, my sites are on four servers, since I manage multiple accounts, so I have somewhat of a cross-section of encounters with their servers.

Just a cautionary note: If you add lots of mods to any bulletin board system, things will tend to slow down. I have added exactly one to our forums at www.theparacast.com/forums (http://www.theparacast.com/forums), and that's for the global announcements.

Peace,
Gene
