The hosting company deploy Mysql version 3.23.58 by default.
What version of VBulletin would i have to go back to to find a version that will work?
Also they deploy PHP version 4.3.11 by default, what version of Vbulletin would be consistent with that?

We always recommend that you install the latest stable version of vBulletin as older versions have bugs and/or known security vulnerabilities that have been fixed in the newest version.
The minimum versions of PHP and MySQL are:
- PHP 4.3.3
- MySQL 4.0.16
The recommended is:
PHP 4.4.2 or 5.1.2 or later
MySQL 5.0.19 or later

this is so easy to change your host these days, so why bother with an obsolete server which did not update his stuff for 4 years?

thanks for prompt reply, however, i want to start using vbulletin, to get experience of integrating with templates, etc. Given that i need an older copy to get started which version would work in the environment given the restraints quoted -
I'll tackle the upgrades to the environment when i've proved to myself the ability to embed vbulletin within an existing site.

£200 per year for 100 domains!

Older versions are available to download in the Members' Area, but as said, we'd advise against installing these due to the security vulnerabilities.
If you purcahse a license you will have access to these versions if you wanted to use them to test or try out features.

i've got a licence - the question is which version would run in the environment given the restraints imposed by the hosting?

3.5.x may run, but there are no guarantees. 3.6.x definitely won't.

vBulletin 3.5.8 was released (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=221903) 15 days ago. I'm not sure how that is an "out-of-date" version that might have "security vulnerabilities".
Not everyone has the choice of MySQL 4.
You can absolutely run vBulletin if you have MySQL 3.23.

Since you have a license, please go here:
http://members.vbulletin.com/membersupport_priority.php
...and enter your email address in one of the boxes. You'll need to have your customer number and password to access the page.
Once you've done this, please post in the appropriate support forum for your version.

I read this as a strong discouragement from using 3.5.x, which is, as far as I know, a still fully supported version of vBulletin?

Yes, it's supported but Jo is saying she is not sure that vB 3.5.x will run on MySQL 3.23.58 as per post #1. :)
I do believe it will though.
