View Full Version : Question about two installations ( * Special Case! )

Can I have vBulletin installed on my localhost as well? That place won't be accessed by anyone except me. That's in order to use my CPU power and not be limited by my DSL connections limits (which means, just to administer my forum with ease and speed).
I'm asking two things here.
1) Is this technically possible? Can vBulletin connect to the same database from two different locations? (From my localhost, and my domain).
2) Is this against vBs' license? I know I can't install multiple copies of the software with a single license, but this case it's not a separate installation. It's the same forum, and the second "install" is not visible from anyone but me.

You want to connect a local webserver to the database on the hosted server?
That might cause even more data to be send over the internet (MySQL data).

Thanks for your quick reply Marco.
What I want to do is to connect two vBulletin installations to the same database. One from my site (where vBulletin is "officially" installed) and a second one from a local hosted web server.
That may send more MySQL data, but I will avoid unnecessary page reloads. Actually I'm more concerned about if it's OK with the vBulletin license, as I don't want to loose a software license that costs 163€.

€163 ???? take a look again that's not what i payed for my owned licence (althrough i have it for several years now) and for the licence the one on your "localhost" should be htaccess protected(and only accessible by the licence owner) or two licences are needed
Never run a server on your personal computer security man security ....

€163 ???? take a look again that's not what i payed for my owned licence (althrough i have it for several years now)Yes, it's indeed 163,33€. See here (http://www.vbulletin.com/order/index.php?step=1) for the prices. Unfortunately, VAT applies for my country, so I have to pay 24.33€ more.
and for the licence the one on your "localhost" should be htaccess protected(and only accessible by the licence owner) or two licences are neededYes, that "second installation" will only be accessed by me (not even co-admins). Thanks for the .htaccess tip.

I know you are allowed to run a test forum for your private use but this is a odd case. Anyway you will still have longer page reloads due to the fact u have to query the database still.

Yes it is possible to run vbulletin on your local machine. I have done it many times. however, unless you have 1 meg or more graphics on each page, it isnt worth it. the standard install of vbulletin is 9 meg and that is for the entire site. It is not against vbulletins license, however i would not recommend it as it would probably take longer to load the page since it needs to go out and ask the database server before being displayed. There is also major security issues with doing that as you basically leave several ports WIDE open. However if you are determined, there is nothing we can do to stop you.

instead of having the database on your computer, direct it to your DB.

I do see a lot of technical problems, but i do not see any licensing problems.
You will still be running only a single board. Technically you could compair this to a load balanced setup with 2 webservers serving the same content.
