mysql upgrade .

my host said that upgrading mysql will wipe all the databases in it and i will have to backup before and restore later.

Is that right ?

Depends on how outdated they are, but that comment is BS. But I would take their advice and backup your files and databases, and ask them to upgrade, and then restore it if things went bad. They're probably on some bad control panel manager that they can't upgrade and simply want to re-install.

Well, it IS bull, but it does make some sense. If you're moving between any major release (3.x to 4.0.x, 4.0.x to 4.1.x, 4.1.x to 5.0.x, etc.) then you're generally better off just backing up, installing, and then restoring from the backup.
