My hosting account is up for renewal with streamline and to be fair its been good even tho not a lot you can do with their package. But my site is starting to go slooooow and its doing my nut, so ive started looking into getting a VPS hosting and was wondering what people thought of them? and are they worth it? Im not experienced in linux at all but i am quick to learn and really want to learn so im not phased by having to setup the server myself.

ive been looking at interhost (http://www.interhost.co.uk/vps/cPanel-vps.html)with their cPanel VPS 10 options at £21.99 a month any good?

Also what should i look for in a package?

Ideas please :D

How much users do you have online? (average)
Do you really need Cpanel?
Cpanel will use a lot of RAM and their build scripts aren't so customizable as Directadmin ones :)

IMO, shared host can meet requirement.
If there have over 1k users online, you should think about VPS
Thanks

No shared host will handle more then 100 users online unless your on some high end shared host that only puts 5-10 sits per server. Never seen one of these by the way. Most put 150-300 per server.

If you can get a dedicated server even a low end one its better then a VPS. However a vps will give u more "burst" resources for the price. If you plan to use the VPS for more then just your web based apps. Example running maybe teamspeak or something else off of it(I do this for my development team) you will have issues on a VPS.

Agreed, look for a VPS with:
CPU: Dual or Quad Core CPU
RAM: 384MB+ burstable to 768MB+
Control Panel: Directadmin (http://www.directadmin.com/demo.html)
Bandwidth: Your site usage + 5GB (Updates and unexpected bandwidth)
Space: Your site usage * 3 (Board + Daily backups + Weekly backups) + 2 GB for OS and Control Panel

Burstable RAM will prevent your board to 'hang' during high peaks.

Also look for a managed solution if you don't know how to manage a VPS, the following aspects are very important:
» Server Tweak (It will reduce the CPU usage and your board will load faster)
» Server monitoring (If the VPS crash you want it back in minutes and not in hours or you'll lose your board members)
» Server updates (Outdated software can cause you security and performance issues)

I know cpanel forces you to use old versions of software. Honestly if you can no interface is better then having one. These "admin panels" eat up alot of resources.

so doesnt really matter what "admin panel" the hosting companies offer you all do the same kinda thing
