I have new hosting for my domain.

Can I FTP and install everything on my new IP, and then just change the DNS to point to that IP later?

OK, I have tried this. I have FTP'd onto the IP address.

I tried entering the IP address into browser and it shows as Database error.

I see in my email I have an error email saying 'cant find table xxx'

Not sure what the issue is :-

1) As I havent run the install script yet, an error message is not a concern
2) When I amended the tableprefix field in config.php I should also have amended some other files
3) I shouldnt be FTP'ing onto the IP, and this is probably where I have messed up

Any ideas into which of the 3 it might be?

If you haven't run the installer, then the tables will not exist. You need to run the installer before trying to access your forums.

Thanks Kerry-Anne, thought that was probably the case.

What has stopped me in my tracks with the ftp'ing to the IP thing (which I have done) is.....

I see in the Install Script instructions that you have to specific BB URL, Home URL etc. My old site is still on this URL, so I was worried about running the script in case there is some conflict issues here?

ps (edit) If I run the script and state 'xwww.mysitename.com' as my home URL, is my only issue going to be that the links in the forum will direct to my live site, instead of to the homepage of the forum.

Just input the IP Address or temporary URL for now as you can change it later once the DNS has updated.

OK,

one last thing (I hope)

If my IP is '11.22.333.4'

And when I click 'Goto My IP' via my host, I will go to xhttp://11.22.333.4/~mylogin/

Do I run the install script at

1) xhttp://11.22.333.4/install/install.php ?
or
2) xhttp://11.22.333.4/~mylogin/install/install.php ?

It will be the second one as that will be where your vBulletin is located.
