Just picked up a couple Woodcrest RAID 5 machines, they are very fast. The reason we got one for the web server as well is because our users change their avatars frequently, which puts an increased load on the disk/CPU.

With that in mind, can anyone yield some advice for optimizing Apache? Running Red Hat Enterprise (RHE) v4.

Dell 1900 Dual Woodcrest 5130
4GB RAM
4x 250GB SATA-II in RAID-5

Apache 2.2.3
PHP 5.2.0

The database is running beautifully.. very low load compared to before, so I'll skip that info. However, the Apache machine has a constant load average of over 5 during peak hours :(

Before you get too involved with the DB machine, is it possible for you to convert to RAID 10 from RAID 5 (either through online level migration or through a reinstall)? DB servers tend to work a lot better under RAID 10 than 5.

yup raid 10 better than raid 5 :)

Also if you're game you could try lighttpd or lightspeed web server instead of apache...

Also install Xcache :)
