Internet providers just get on my nerves!

I'm supposed to get Unlimited 8MB Broadband and I Only get 2MB, and because i have a bunch of computers using the internet and I download a lot they moan, and its supposed to be unlimited!, Time to switch provider, my 12 Month contract is almost over thank god.

Heres the email:
Dear Customer,

This email contains important information regarding your broadband account.

Your broadband Internet usage has been highlighted as exceptionally high
during peak periods and is affecting the service that we provide to other
customers.

All of our users have the right to an acceptable quality of service, and
to ensure this Tiscali employs a Fair Use Policy
(http://www.tiscali.co.uk/fup). This gives Tiscali
the right to manage customers whose usage adversely affects our network
and the service of other customers. This is referred to in clause 8.4 of
the Terms and Conditions of our Broadband service (note clauses 5.9 in
the old Terms and Conditions if you registered before 2005) and
detailed in our Fair Use Policy (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/fup).

You may upload and download as you wish outside the peak hours;
however we ask that you are considerate when using the internet
during the peak period. Peak hours are from 6pm to 11pm Monday to
Sunday. To avoid any further heavy use warnings
we strongly recommend you adhere to the following guidelines:

o) Do not download large files during the peak periods

o) Do not use Peer-to-Peer file sharing software during peak
periods (e.g. Kazaa, BitTorrent)

o) Try and keep internet use to email and web browsing during these times.

If you do not reduce your usage during these peak times we
will manage your usage. This means that you will share
bandwidth with other heavy users during peak times instead of
sharing bandwidth with normal users. Your service will continue
to be unlimited, but by sharing bandwidth with other heavy users
you are likely to experience slower speeds during peak times.

If you have a query regarding this letter then you can
email broadbandservices@uk.tiscali.com

Important Note: When emailing please use your Tiscali email
address (username@tiscali.co.uk) and use the following reference
in the subject line "FUP Warning1". It may prove difficult for us
to process any queries or requests without this information.

Yours Sincerely

Tiscali Broadband Team

I have downloaded probably over 100 GB per month at one point, and my ISP hasn't cared.

If your contract or service is for 8 mbps service and they're capping it at 2 mbps service, I'd be pissed...unless you're really using a lot of bandwidth. Sustained theoretical max of 8 mbps 24/7 for a whole month is 2.5 TB. 2 mbps is 648 GB. You'll never really be able to sustain those speeds for such long times unless you're constantly downloading torrents all the time.

Look in your contract. There are probably exceptions for things like torrents, or they note that 8 mbps is the theoretical max and not guaranteed to be sustained for any serious amount of time.

Remember, megabits, not megabytes. Divide by 8 to get megabytes per second, which would be MB/sec or MBps.

Most people get 7MBps out of them but i only get 2 for some unknown reason always have done, which is why i'm going to give: bethere.co.uk a try.

Lucky my router is designed for ADSL/2 & 24MB Broadband.

Your Tiscali TOS actually mentions Fair Use, if you go above the average they can consider this to be no longer fair use. They're right. You even admit to download a lot.

We have fair use too, it is about 150gb per week, for the 24mbit. Which is quite reasonable.

Is having 5 computers doing normal stuff classed as using to much of my limit?

I would think doing class activities wouldn't drain too much bw, but that's what I usually do (e-mail, IM and using search engines - in reference to class and group work). However, I'm assuming you have logs as well, what is your peak activity around?
