Cool, the bug I reported (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs36.php?do=view&bugid=1196) has been fixed. :P
But I think it's too early for a new release, as 3.6.3 hasn't taken enough time.

We shouldn't complain about the time when upgrades are released. If we were paying for a service and not getting timely upgrades then we would have a reason to complain.

You're actually paying for the permission to run one instance of vBulletin, and we're offering the latest stable release from at least one branch. It doesn't include a guarantee of future releases. But I understand what you're saying ;)

Probably code in variables, or functions, or typing errors .. depending on which bug report.
If you require details I recommend to do a file comparison to find the changes.

To be honest, I have to disagree. Yes, there have been maintenance releases that included security updates, but some have been minor or really hard to exploit. We've chosen to still release an update for them. Comparing us to other forum software you will see we're not even in the top 5. That and the latest bugtraq reports have either been fake or inaccurate or for older versions that have already been patched in our latest releases. Opposed to others where remote file inclusion is common or sql injection isn't something new. Comparing us to the amount of microsoft security releases is like comparing a Porsche with a Lada perhaps (grain of salt)

I'm thrilled that y'all are so conscientious about releasing bug fixes and security upgrades. :)
My only request would be that you put a note in the download area when you know that the current one will need upgraded very soon. Even, or especially, if it's just a few days ahead of the new release.
I'm not sure how long it takes y'all to build the upgrades and prepare them for delivery and announcement, but it is kind of frustrating to take a day to upgrade (for those of us who are heavily modded) and then find out a few days later that we should have waited a few days - or worse, a single day. :o
Anyway, kudos to the team, and thank you for all your hard work. I love that you so carefully tell us which files have changed. This one doesn't look like it'll take many template fixes, so I'm going to do a full-upgrade, so the updated files and templates will be easy to track for the next one. ;)

Comparing us to other forum software you will see we're not even in the top 5.
Theres other forums software that is better than this?
The software keeps getting better and better. So many new features that really make my plugins and products obsolete. If I havnt been working with vB for the past 4 years it might be overwhelming tho - it was easy to learn with v.2 and grow with the upgrades as they came out.

I rather pick a quick follow up release over a security hack and unforseen downtime anyday. You're free to simply patch the software and upgrade to a new version in the future. It's a recommended upgrade, not a required one.

I like the vB way of handle security problems, certainly one of most secure PHP software even written of the well know world. You should worry about severe flaws like sql injects, remote command execution, etc. Hardly somebody will compromise your board due XSS.
vB team always take security very serious even if is a small hole. :D

What would be the point of a few hours warning?
You would still have to upgrade, and it would just make people start 'When is it coming?' threads if it wasn't released on the exact moment.

Well then I know not to be designing a template to work with 3.6.3 and all of a sudden I look back here and there is a new version.
What innovations do you have for the templates that were modified between 3.6.3 and 3.6.4?
bbcode_code, bbcode_html, bbcode_php, calendar_edit_customfield, newreply, pm_showpm..
Even if you have presented the bbcodes/calendar custom field edits/replies/show pm screen, the only one that would require anything more than a visiual comparison would be newreply.php .. and I can't really see what kind of changes would be made to that page.

I wish you guys had a "changed files" patch. Just like the security patch, but with all changed files. It'd be less download for me and less work as well as I wouldn't manually have to pick out the changed files from the list to upload (takes too long to upload the entire package).
Just my 2 cents. :)

Use the download that does not include images when there are no images to add or change. It really speeds things up.

too much workI can only think you are doing something wrong or using a very long winded method - vB.org has quite a bit of custom code and I'm not expecting that to take more than about 30 minutes, and most of that will be pre-upgrade preperation, and waiting for file uploads.

Thanks guys for this quick update. I was just upgrading to 3.6.3 last week, and I'm doing the upgrade to 3.6.4 right now. :D
It would be nice though if there could be a way to be updated via e-mail when a release is made, instead of waiting for the eBulletin or whatever it is called. I have a subscription to the Announcements forum set, but that sends me everything that is posted to that forum. Maybe something through the members area can be set up?

I agree with that. I usually upload the whole thing (except the do not upload of course :P) and then do the upgrade. It'd be a lot quicker to do the changed files only.

What I don't understand though is why include graphics that are in directories other than /images.

Indeed!
(The no-images package offers the download without the /images/ directory for a smaller filesize/faster download.)
And /root/favicon.ico is definitely NOT in the /images/ directory.

Upgrade completed from 3.6.3 in minutes (as it has been said before, upload took more time than the upgrade :D ).
Is there any file to be removed after the upgrade? (No install.php in install directory already). Would deleting whole install directory make any harm or should I delete it already?

Generally in the announcement it will state, if any files or images are no longer needed.
Edit: Disregard. I'm a dummy! :(
I have misread what the good folks at vB have written in not one place but two.
Before proceeding to the Admin Control Panel, you must delete the 'install/install.php' and 'install/upgrade1.php' files from your webserver. You may then enter the control panel and start working on your new vBulletin!Although it should probably say upgrade.php since I don't see upgrade1.php.

The install file does pose a slight risk due to its ability to wipeout the forum, thus why we recomend removing it.

And /root/favicon.ico is definitely NOT in the /images/ directory.
The 'no images' download includes everything except the /images/ folder and the /favicon.ico file.
This is because these are image files that a customer may have adjusted to fit his site, and thus shouldn't be overwritten.

Just so I understand correctly, for people who are running, say, 3.6.1 (non 3.6.3 versions), the only option is to upgrade to 3.6.4 to fix the security issue right? In other words, there are no drop in patches for these <3.6.3 versions?

This was a security update, if there was no security problem then there wouldn't have been a release. Unfortunately we felt it best to resolve this now rather than leaving it open for exploitation.

Ongoing security issues are way too common with vBulletin. I think it is best to keep vBulletin and your main website databases separate (even if this means members having two logins). This way, if vBulletin gets hacked, at least your eCommerce database is safe.

That is a strong statement to make. Would you care to explain please?
With vBulletin 3.6 there has been 1 security issue inside vBulletin discovered, for which we immediatly released an update.
The second security related release was to help mitigate a vulnerability in IE, not in vBulletin.

Actually in the core product security issues have been astonishingly UNcommon lately and 3.6 seems to be extremely stable and secure. There have been quite a few related to hacks/plugins though, however that's nothing to do with Jelsoft and is no reflection on the actual vBulletin product.
Upgrading a modified board is much much easier than it ever was, and although it's still a minor pain I'd rather have the current system whereby any issues found are announced and patched with a new release, than what I had a few years ago when using XMB, which was widespread hacking of XMB boards going on yet the owners of the software pretended nothing was happening. Oh, those were the days.

Nobody ever answered this, so I'm giving it another shot here.
I'm going to upgrade from 3.5.4 to whatever version of 3.6 is around by the time this is answered.
Questions:
1) I use Flashchat for 3.5.4 - does anybody know if that's going to be a problem? I know it's not supported or whatever the lingo is, I'm just asking if anybody knows. Unofficially, if you like.
2) I know I'll have to redo all my current styles because I edited a lot of templates... is there any way at all of saving just the colors so that I don't have to redo that part anyway? I am talking (I think) about the "Main CSS" portion of the styles.
3) Can I try old styles with the new version and see what happens, or will this screw something up?
Thanks very much for any help.

Mini, if you askled in a proper support thread you'd probally get quicker responses.
1. We cannot verify if flashchat works with newer versions, you might want to contact them directly. its their software.
2. Colors won't need to be revereted, and nothing gets revereted during the upgrade either, you manyally have to do this.
3. You can, chances are newer ajax functions won't work.

Firstly, thanks for getting the security update out fast! There have been far fewer issues with security in vB than in any other forum software I am aware of, so whatever the gits say, thanks for a brilliant piece of software!
My question is:
None of my templates have changed from 3.6.3 to 3.6.4, so do I just upload the whole of 3.6.4 over my existing files and upgrade, or can I just upload the files that have changed and then run install?
I'm not 100% clear on what to do here without having to redo changes to my footer, header etc. that I have done.

I'm glad the security update came out so quickly, but could there be a lighter-weight version in the future? There were tons of files included that are unneeded for anyone upgrading rather than installing, and more files = more upload time = more downtime. A third release only including files that were changed since the last minor revision would be great.

Currently running 3.62
Do I need to upgrade to 3.63 before 3.64 or will this latest upgrade catch me up with out additional files or templates to change?
The upgrade to 3.6.4 will upgrade any prior version of vBulletin 3.5 or 3.6. Upload all the files except the images folder.
Also, if I have modified some templates, what is the best way to proceed?
You will need to look at the announcements for 3.6.3 and 3.6.4 and see which templates were changed by Jelsoft. The ones that say "Requires Revert" are more than cosmetic and may cause problems on your forum if you do not make the same changes to your templates. Use the template comparison tool.
Will my mods from 3.62 work on the new templates?
You will need to check with the authors or websites of those mods to see if there are any problems with 3.6.3 or 3.6.4. I have a folder on my computer which contains a link to each mod on vBulletin.org so before I upgrade, I can check each one to make sure it's compatible.

Go to the page mentioned above and download the Security patch for 3.6.3. Extract the zip archive, then connect to your web server using FTP and overwrite the following files using the replacement versions from the zip.
admincp/index.php
You do not need to download this patch if you perform a full upgrade to 3.6.4.

I have vBulletin 3.6.3 istalled which is best to upgrade or new install? How do I patch it to 3.6.3?
Why would you install? You want to wipe all users, posts, threads, etc. and start over?
Patching is only a stopgap measure if you have heavily customized your forum and you do not have the time to dedicate to an upgrade. Patching is uploading 1-2 PHP files or 1-2 XML files. It does not upgrade your forum, it does not change the version number, and it does not fix any of the bugs in the new version.
Full Upgrade of a forum with few mods/plugins/add-ons and template changes requires re-uploading all the vB files and running /install/upgrade.php.
Full Upgrade of a forum which is highly customized requires doing the above plus comparing and contrasting templates and synching up the changes. That is why some people just patch. Every template you modify increases the possible complexity of upgrading.

why HTML code is always off in vbulletin
what is his role generally
Because users can post bad JavaScript.
There is a free add-on at vBulletin.org that allows Administrator only to use HTML.

Thanks for the update! I have to admit, I was really worried about this upgrade being that it was my first and because I'd spent so much time modifying my board. Well with only six template changes to review, I have to say this was a heck of a lot easier than I thought it would be. lol

Where does one find the 'what's new' for v3.6?
Does vbulletin provide anything that could be used (hosted) on our local forums to help promote the new features on our forums? Copying a thread from here would be very manual due to all the pictures. It would be great if there were a simple html page w/images directory we could put on our forums!

Floris made a great demo when the Ajax features first came out in 3.5:

It would be great to have something like this to demo all the new features to moderators and users.

I would settle for something like this thread

That was in stand-alone format. Would be nice to be able to place something in an annoucement, etc.

Did you completely reupload vBulletin and run the upgrade script? (/install/upgrade.php)
Upgrade:
- Reupload ALL vBulletin files except the /images folder
- Run Upgrade Script
Not Upgrade:
- Uploading just the changed files.
- Installing a patch.
- Uploading any and all XML files made available as security patches.

No, there's no way to downgrade unless you just use a backup from 3.6.3 or whatever version you wish to roll back to.

Well, 3.6.4 runs very fine for me. Maybe you should visit the troubleshooting area here to ensure the problems really have something to do with the upgrade or not?

Funny to ask this question after being a vB owner for a whole year (My license will expire tomorrow after), but here it is anyway:
What does it take to revert a changed template on upgrade? On new release announcements some templates that are changed are marked as do not require revert, while others do, so what's the difference?

What does it take to revert a changed template on upgrade?
To revert a changed template, click Revert. :) It gives you a list of changed templates when you upgrade right there at the top of the AdminCP with a big "Revert All" button.
If you don't want to lose your customizations, then you must compare the two, see what Jelsoft changed, and make the same change(s) yourself. There are Template History and Template Compare features built into vBulletin.
On new release announcements some templates that are changed are marked as do not require revert, while others do, so what's the difference?
Requires Revert: YES -- Bugs, functionality, usability will be affected if you do not synch up the template changes. If you fail to upgrade for several versions, users may not be able to post, avatars might not show up, etc. The worst example is trying to use a vBulletin 3 style on vBulletin 3.6. Almost nothing works!
Requires Revert: NO -- Cosmetic changes that do not affect functionality; Language-related bugs that will not affect English only forums.

My bad English language! I meant to say what's the effect of reverting a template rather to ask how to revert them. :) I do know how to revert templates, but the real confusion is what you've answered below:

I never knew that, and actually I think this is a gray area that is never explained or documented in detail by Jelsoft.
My thinking was that templates that require revert are those which reflect PHP scripts changes (e.g. new variables or changed ones, SQL query changes, file paths, etc.). I thought that not all templates that are changed are mentioned in the release announcement, so what I always did is to revert all the templates. Well, things were easier than I thought.

what's the effect of reverting a template?
Reverting a template simply destroys any customizations you've made and sets it to "factory" settings. Reverting all the templates every time you upgrade vBulletin is a drastic method and I prefer not to do this.
I never knew that, and actually I think this is a gray area that is never explained or documented in detail by Jelsoft.
I sense no "gray area" or ambiguity in the vBulletin Release Announcements of late.
If you find a template you have customized in this list, you will likely want to include the changes made here. However, this is not always required. Under each change listed here, you will see "requires revert?" This refers to whether the changes are mandatory (yes). If the changes are mandatory, things will break if you do not incorporate the changes made. It is strongly recommended that you revert and recustomize any templates that say they require a revert.
My thinking was that templates that require revert are those which reflect PHP scripts changes (e.g. new variables or changed ones, SQL query changes, file paths, etc.).
Templates do not contain PHP or MySQL code. But they do contain variables, conditionals, etc. If it says Requires Revert, it's an important change.
I thought that not all templates that are changed are mentioned in the release announcement
There is a list of ALL the templates that have changed in each new vBulletin release announcement, as well as an item-by-item review of which templates Requires Revert and in some cases, the variable name or other item which changed.

I know, for I said "are those which reflect PHP scripts changes". I meant, if for example a variable on index.php was renamed from $username to, say, $user_name, then FORUMHOME template will require revert to reflect the new variable name instances inside it.
Thanks for an interesting reply, as usual.

This thread is for discussing the release of vBulletin 3.6.4.
Please use this thread to talk about things you like or installation experiences etc., but please do not use this thread to post troubleshooting queries or bug reports. These threads tend to grow very large and bug reports etc. tend to become lost and will not get attention from the support or development teams.
For reporting bugs, please use the appropriate bug tracker (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs36.php).
Mini, if you askled in a proper support thread you'd probally get quicker responses.

vBulletin 3.6 Troubleshooting and Problems (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=117)
Bug Tracker (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs36.php)
Those forums will most likely generate a faster and more accurate response to questions and problems.

I am still running 3.62 and it seems like I need to upgrade to 3.64 to avoid the security risk. However, I'm real worried I'm going to screw something up with this upgrade. I've made some minor modifications to templates/styles/images, so I don't want to run this upgrade and screw things up! Any general advice?
Also: I'm a vBulletin newbie and 3.62 is the first version i have worked with
