restoring a database

When restoring a database, is there a way to just import the basic stuff, like members, posts, PMs, etc without all the modifications made to the tables, etc because a former admin installed MODs on the site and I was wondering if there is a quick way to get rid of the unnecessary tables created.

No if you are restoring you will need to restore the whole database.

You could use ImpEx to import your data into a new clean install, but it will change all the internal id's (post/thread/userid etc.) so all you old links to posts etc will not work anymore.
