Do I need to wait for my host name to be recognised before I can upload vbulletin? When using SmartFTP it doesn't recognise my domain only my IP.

Your Domain name is still propogating across the web. If you have FTP access via IP address you could upload the files but to run the install script yor need to point the browser at your domain /forum/install/install.php

Just to reiterate, you can absolutely build and setup your entire website while it's still an IP address. No need to wait.

OK I'm totally lost with this same issue.
I have forwarded my domain to the ip of my server but as yet it still points back to the 123 reg page :(
I have uploaded the vb files correctly but when I try to point my browser at http://**.**.***.**/forums/install.install.php I get this:
Not Found
The requested URL /forums/install/install.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I'm pulling my hair out here - can anybody help please?

Are you using shared hosting? Is it paid hosting?
If so, it will be at http://ip.ip.ip.ip/home/user/forums/install/install.php or something related.

Thanks mate, I got it now. I was putting the upload folder in the public_html folder. I should have just used its contents. Did that and all was well. Ple see my thread in here if you are any good with horrible sql issues!! :s
