I have setup an automatic daily offsite ftp backup via whm panel. How do I test that the sql backup is free from errors and will work if I need to restore it?

Upload the dump, import it into a SEPARATE database, and test?

It's a bit difficult because it is around 200Mb as an uncompressed .sql :(

200mb isn't exactly very large. That shouldn't take anymore than 15 min to import.
