Lots of template changes. Need to see if this is not too much to work on. :D Thanks for the neat update though.
One question, can I manually edit the templates instead of reverting them?

You might wish to check out my vB Template Browser (http://www.feldoncentral.com/forumpics/vb3templatebrowser/) script. You upload the original style XML file for 2 or more different versions of vBulletin and then you can say "I want to see the default 3.6.1 and 3.6.0 versions of the postbit_legacy template" and it will show them side-by-side. You can use this to figure out what changed between the two versions and manually make the same change yourself.
I think the Template History feature in vB is nice, but there's no way to find out what Jelsoft changed between 3.6.0 and 3.6.1 of a template, only to find out what's different between your customized 3.6.0 template and their untouched 3.6.1 template, which is confusing IMO.
P.S. If anyone knows how to do recursive comparison of two text boxes and display the results in color the same way that vB does with their Template Comparison feature, please send me a PM because I'd love to implement this feature. There's already a place reserved at the bottom of the script to add this code.

Personally I would recommend that all customers upgrade to 3.6.1, as some of the bugs in 3.6.0 may be affecting your board and your visitors without you even knowing about it.

Thanks.
I have a lot of customizations to my site. I've been working on it for a couple of weeks and almost finished.
I read this statement by Kier:
Note:
You need to only look through this post for templates you have customized. You do not need to take any action to ensure that your uncustomized templates are the latest versions.
If you find a template you have customized in this list, you will likely want to include the changes made here. However, this is not always required. Under each change listed here, you will see "requires revert?" This refers to whether the changes are mandatory (yes). If the changes are mandatory, things will break if you do not incorporate the changes made. It is strongly recommended that you revert and recustomize any templates that say they require a revert.
Additionally, you may wish to use the "Find Updated Template" feature in the control panel to find templates that have been changed since your last edit to them.
How can I simply make the template updates without actually reinstalling everything? For instance, when phpbb updates, they tell you what line of what page needs to be updated. That made updating a customized board easy. Is there something similar available here?

Wed 13th Sep '06, 1:55pm
If you use the template compare system, then yes. It highlights which parts of a template had changed; you can also view which templates have changed from the default and your own.
The announcement lists just general changes.

I have a question, does the template changes (the ones with code here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1210752#post1210752) need to be done by us manually? Or simple reverting it will work?

Question - on the main AdminCP page, it said old templates....I clicked it and reverted all templates that it showed for all the styles that I have....does that make the update complete now?
Sry, this is the first full update that I did....I do releaize that all hacks will have to be done again.....but the upgrade script plus the template reverts makes it just like installing a VB 3.6.1 new right?

If you modified a template at 3.6.0, that template is "frozen in time" at 3.6.0.
If there was some kind of bug fix in that template in 3.6.1, you will still experience the bug because your 3.6.0 version of that template is overriding the one from 3.6.1.
You have three choices:
1) Revert the template. Any changes you've made will be lost, but then the template will be up-to-date with 3.6.1.
2) Use the Template Compare feature or some other tool to figure out what change was made by Jelsoft from 3.6.0 -> 3.6.1 in that template and make the same change.
3) Do nothing and you may have unexpected, buggy results with that template.

Yep. When you upgrade, any templates you've customized are still "frozen in time" at the 3.6 state, but everything else should be 3.6.1.

You could have used the template compare feature to find the differences and update them that way. At least then you would not have to re-add all your template changes.

i really dont understand,
it says taht if you have Customize a template you will need to revert, and that erases the customize template you had.
so in order words after upgrade to 3.6.1 you will have to go back and customize all over again?

Yes, that is correct.
Would really like to see a Spell Checker added to vB.
feldon23
Wed 13th Sep '06, 6:34pm
Yes, that is correct.
Would really like to see a Spell Checker added to vB.IESpell is a free spellcheck for IE6.
Google Toolbar 2 has spellcheck.
I am not sure about spellcheck for Firefox that works with vB, I think it is being held back by a bug in Firefox.
It is a huge waste of server RAM and bidirectional communication to try to do spellcheck thru wysiwyg editor when spellcheck can be added to the browser.
Freddie Bingham
Wed 13th Sep '06, 6:36pm
The google toolbar spellcheck works in WYSIWYG if you click the http://images.vbulletin.com/images_vb3/editor/switchmode.gif button first to take it out of WYSIWYG.

Wed 13th Sep '06, 6:39pm
I'm using Firefox and Spellbound and it works GREAT. I would much rather use it than to have the overhead that a built in spell check would add to the server. Plus...Spellbound works on all the sites that I visit. I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.6

well it was stable. It's just annoying, because of the infuriating REVERT templates, every bit of customisation gets lost, which is why they should include a navbar editor, because now I have to feck about getting rid of all the grime I don't want like memberslist (what is the point if we disable it??? bizarre) and add the stuff I do want like links to my gallery, links and home page. I can't believe vbulletin have still not sorted this out - they must know how much messing around it takes. sigh. no I'm not really complaining, cos I want bugs fixed, but there has to be a better system than this - I had two nav bars, now I gotta go searching through all the threads on here and other places to get it how I want, when a simple editor in admin would solve this. Well maybe the how to sections will be properly updated here so I won't waste too much more time.

If you don't revert, just edit, wouldn't you still have a notice that your template needs to be reverted?
I only had 3 templates to edit.
I LOVE PLUGINS! :D
It took me longer to backup my boards than to update them.

If you don't revert, just edit, wouldn't you still have a notice that your template needs to be reverted?
If you have a template which dates back to 3.6.0 and vB says you need to update it, and you edit that template for ANY reason, regardless of what you're actually in there doing, it will consider that template updated for 3.6.1.
Again, I think the best solution is to get a "vector" of every template changed from 3.6.0 to 3.6.1 and then make the same changes. The number of changes WE make to the templates has to be far greater than the number of changes made to the templates by the developers. We're rearranging entire chunks and removing sections. They're fixing URLs, tags, etc.

If you have not modified any of the HTML on your forum, which is contained in the Templates, then you don't have to do anything besides upload the vBulletin files and run the upgrade.php script.
IF you have made any changes to the Templates, then you have additional work ahead of you.

I am a bit arsed off with all this updating and stuff, in words of one syllable is this update security focused and if i decide not to upgrade will my site be vulnerable from vb3.6.0?
vBulletin 3.6.1 does not contain any security updates.
vBulletin 3.6.1 fixes over 100 bugs from 3.6.0 and adds a few features. If you are not encountering or affected by these bugs or don't need those features, you can wait to upgrade until you have more time to set aside for this task.
The time between the release of 3.6.0 and 3.6.1 has been 6 weeks. I think that is not unusual. If it were any longer, there would be a lot of complaints about bugs not being fixed and slow updates.
And because of the release of security patches for 3.5.1, 3.5.2, 3.5.3, 3.5.4, and 3.5.5, all upgrades since 3.5.0 (which was released September 28, 2005) have been optional for security purposes.

I have never updated my vbulletin before so how do I do an upgrade?
I tried and this is exactly what I did.
1. Run the update script for 3.6.1. It however said that my version is not what it was downloaded at(it said RC2). I first got vb when it was in RC2, however when I upgraded to 3.6.0, maybe I did it wrong then. I dunno...
2. Then I reverted all me templates.
3. Then I started moving all my files over to the appropriate folders. I just did the '/' folder first to see if there was anything that doesn't work. Well I refreased and all I saw was a database error everywhere and it said something like "Invalid SQL..."
Now I have 2 guesses as to why it may have done this.
1. I should have run the update script last.
2. I should have moved all the files because.
Or maybe it's because the updating script thought I had a different version...
Please don't use this thread for support questions.

The ones that ask you to revert them need to be updated (either reverted or edited manually via the template compare feature) the ones listed in the release thread that say revert not required are optional updates and can be done at your leisure (although still probably a good idea).

I've been a bit busy with other things and had put off upgrading from 3.5.4 to 3.6 (I know, but I didn't have the time to dredge thru all the templates/changes because of mod's installed) I had planned on doing this starting on Monday night. Now there's 3.6.1. Ugh. So do i first do the upgrade to 3.6.0 make all my template fixes, then download and upgrade with the 3.6.1 pack? or.. can I just download the 3.6.1 pack and do a straight upgrade from 3.5.4 using the 3.6.1 pack?

You can do whatever you want. You'll just have to go through every changed template and make the necessary changes. In your case it might just be easier to revert and re-edit each customized template.

3.6.1 was 6 weeks after 3.6. I would imagine, based on previous releases, that 3.6.2 will be 1-3 months after 3.6.1.

3.6.1 was 6 weeks after 3.6. I would imagine, based on previous releases, that 3.6.2 will be 1-3 months after 3.6.1.
I just have to mention that this statement isn't quite technically correct.
Theoretically at this point there is no 3.6.2 on the horizon as there are no serious bugs in 3.6.1 as of yet to merit a 3.6.2 (or at least none that I know of).
HOWEVER ... that could change tomorrow and there might be a security hole discovered that might make Jelsoft release 3.6.2 tomorrow!
In theory the next known "upgrade" so to speak is either 3.7 or more likely 4.0!
That being said .. it is very likely we will see several updates to the 3.6 line mostly for batches of general and/or security bug fixes AND posibly some minor feature additions/tweeks ..
3.6.2 might be out in a few days or in 6 months, it really depends on the severity of the bugs they find in 3.6.1 and how urgently they want to add anything (which is very unlikely since any major new features will probably only be added for 3.7 or 4.0)
Now .. THAT is actually a question you can ask that Jelsoft probably does have an answer for in which is the next significant release: 3.7 or 4.0 and what are the planned changes/additions that's being planned for it? ... as for an ETA of that version ... well ... that's always subject to too many variables to give any accurate date at all .. however, I would say with 99% certainty that there will not be a 3.7 or 4.0 until sometime next year ... if it's a less significant upgrade (probably 3.7.0) like 3.6 was to 3.5, then we'll probably see it in about 4-8 months ... if it's a significant upgrade with several new features then it will most likely be about a year*!
* = or in more likelyhood, 366 days after I renew my access to the member download area ... lol
In terms of minor upgrades in the 3.6.x line ... on average we probably see about 6 or 7 before the next signifcant release (with one coming anywhere between 3 weeks to 3 months depending on the bugs) .. that being said though .. 3.6.1 *COULD* theoretically be the last one until 4.0.0
On that note however ... it would be kinda cool for there to be a semi-official roadmap with a summary of featured marked for probable inclusion in the next significant upgrade and obviously not an ETA, but posibly a DNB (definitiely not before) date.
Sorry, but "this is great!" is a perfectly valid response to this topic. If you have a question, problem, issue, or etc. they go in the Troubleshooting or How Do I forums.
I'll have to both agree and disagree with you on that ... these discussion topics do tend to get sidetracked quite a bit too much to the point where it IS quite annoying sometimes ... however you're right in that someone saying that upgraded successfully IS indeed very relavent as I often wait to see a few people have upgraded test forums successfully before upgrading myself ... BUT it would be nice if people also posted other relevant info when they do such as database size, members, posts, time taken to upgrade and any issues / problems / questions / ambiguities in instructions they had.
That being said though ... after a few days and 10 or so people saying they've upgraded successfully, unless someone has anything technical to add or had a larger database than any posted so far, then "I just upgraded" does take away from the topic and turns what could be a helpful thread into one that people don't even bother to read!
I guess in theory the argument is that anything technical doesn't even really belong here in the first place .. and that's true to some degree ... but I've learnt quite a bit over the years from reading these threads and I think it probably would actually be a bit better if it were kept a bit more focused!
But that's just my opinion! lol :)
How's this for being off-topic myself .. lol: Feldon23 ... sorry if it seems my two comments didn't quite agree with what you posted ... I want to be VERY clear that these two are actually exceptions and I have seen you being VERY helpful to various members with their questions and give excellent and informative replies ... and for that you should be commended and thanked .. so .. umm .. Thanks! :)

4. Go back and customise.
Is that it?
Thanks for the help.

6 templates to revert, Nothing major. To be expected.
Forum upgrade broke my "Favorite Smilies" plugin but it was easy to reinstall that.
Well done guys!! Keep up the good work.

Heh, I had somewhere around 35 templates to re-edit. That's my expected number now. :p
I'm lucky most of the template changes were documented in the release thread.
So I've been running 3.6.1 for a week now and no major problems have come up. :)

I have everything set to update, but just wanted to make sure I understand.
1. Basically any templates that I have customised I will need to revert.
2. Do I need to make the changes that are listed on the other thread?
3. After reverting & making the changes (if needed) then I can install the upgrade.
4. Go back and customise.
Is that it?
Thanks for the help.
1. If your template was changed significantly from when you first customized it and vBulletin 3.6.1, and is required to be reverted in order for vBulletin 3.6.1 to function, then yes.
2. Changes?
3. Just upgrade, and then use the Find Updated Templates function in the AdminCP to locate all changed templates and update the ones needed to be updated.

I have upgrade from 3.6 to 3.6.1 and read the thread with the templates to be reverted, modified, etc but I found few things unclear. I am not a programmer but I could search and replace code in a template.
Here is one of my problems: Under my default skin (provided by vBulletin) when going to CP, I do not see anymore "Private messages" anymore. If I access private messages link from the navbar after login, they are there but when you open one, it is displayed but no "Reply" or "Forward" button, only "Delete message". What template I have to change and how?
However, I assume there are some other things that may not work and following the thread with template change: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1210754&postcount=2 , as I was writing in the beginning, some changes are NOT clear what to do. For example:
------------------------------------------
threadadmin_movethread
threadadmin_movethreads
threadadmin_mergethread
threadadmin_mergethreads
Several changes were made to these templates. Expiring hours option for redirects, expiring redirect option for mergethread and mergethreads, set redirect title on movethread, select destination poll for merging multiple polls on mergethreads, synchronize style between the templates.
How exactly to "redirect title on movethread, select destination poll for merging multiple polls on mergethreads, synchronize style between the templates" ???
-------------------------------------------
postbit_quickedit
Add a maxlength attribute to the deletion reason
How, where?
-------------------------------------------
And there are some other... My second question: Do I have to modify/revert all templates that are listed there and under each skin I have installed?

Further to my initial message, I have done some reading through the forum and somebody else posted the same problem as above, of not having "Reply" and "Forward" buttons when viewing the private messages. The solution provided there was to reload on the server all vBulletin 3.6.1 non image files. I just did that and the problem is still there. Please advise. :)

Ever since I've installed VB 3.6.1, I've got nothing but errors in my ACP. Everything else works fine, but I can't do anything in my ACP, and my board is turned off..so, I can't turn it on or anything, basically, the site is down.

I've looked in the navpanel.php file and nothing "seems" to be wrong with it.
I am running:
PHP 4.4.4
PHP Max Post Size 8.00 MB
PHP Maximum Upload Size 2.00 MB
MySQL Version 4.1.21-standard-log MySQL Packet Size 16.00 MB
So, I meet requirements. All hacks that we had have been erased, so, I don't know what could be interferring.
Help, my board has been down for 5 days now.

3.6.1 was not released because of a security flaw. It contains bug fixes for ~100 issues as well as a few functionality tweaks. vBulletin 3.6.0 is secure, as is vBulletin 3.5.5.
Information on how to upgrade your forum is given in the announcement.

Heard that. Between upgrading my own sites and other sites for clients, I'm about to tear my hair out (I do a lot of template customization which only adds to the headache after an upgrade).
Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the prompt bug and security fixes, I just wish we'd have a nice long quiet period where we can sit on one release for a time.

I agree, that's also my problem.
Many template changes and when I have to revert a lot of them it takes me every time ages to restore it.

Same problem for me, custom styles, custom templates, custom plugins.
I think that the solution is be more quiet with the releases, employ more time to test, or publish as release candidate or unstable,

Then pretty much every software ever made will be labeled unstable forever.
There is heavy testing done to vBulletin. The problem is, not everything is able to be testing. You have lterally hundreds of different configurations vBulletin can be used in, and not all bugs are forun with everyone since some only effect certain environments, etc.
I don't know why everyone is fretting about it; there was more than a month between vBulletin 3.6.0 and 3.6.1; the announcement stated that 3.6.2 will be coming soon, not how soon.
I don't know why people bring up the plugin issue. If done properly, they should still be operable; the only thing would be templates which do not change very often after a version goes stable (anything else either fixes some bugs or adds more functionality).
It's just getting tiresome to hear people complain about upgrades and assuming alot more than what was said.
