How much to pay designer?

I'm struggling on getting a modern looking header design for my forum, I've been looking around for designers but its had to know who to trust etc.
How much would you say the going rate is for a custom built logo and forum header design?

Yes, SitePoint is a very very good website, I've used SitePoint alot for my logos and custom built templates.
