Reading some other posts i see that people with certain chatrooms on thier forums have been "hacked"?

I'm a complete beginner and about to start my own forum using VB but want to make sure I'm covered against thing like this. I won't be using a chatroom but what else do i need to look out for?

Can anyone offer me tips on how to keep my forum safe? I know this is a delicate subject so please pm me if you wish.

It was FlashChat, which is an add-on to vBulletin. Actually it was a lack of best practices in the installation of the software. Instead of just putting the handshake files for vBulletin, by default it puts handshake files for 2 dozens different CMS and forum software which left things open for hacking.
