I am considering switching over to VB but am concerned that I will have a whole new set of learning issues (just after I finally figured out UBB)

1) Do I need to learn about PHP and mSQL and mySQL? Or is it really plug and play and edit a few templates?

2) How would I have memebers jump to a thread...I'd rather not have them go to the front page of the forums.

3) How customizable is this, really? Like can we move/change the navigation, layout etc?

Thanks a bunch.

1) It's pretty much plug&play. You just need to know where mySQL is located
3) You can change virtually anything trough the templates

Automated setup process (much easier than UBB).

Little knowledge needed to install these forums.

Well, I've first got to figure out how to install mySQL on my server. PHP and MySQL aren't installed on every server. :(

I guess after I get past that hump it sounds pretty easy.

Yes if you are hosting the forum on your own server, and do not have a hosting company to have install it, then it will be harder:)

But if you have a hosting company that offers them, then it should be very easy.

you could always check the php en mysql sites for installing instructions. It's not really hard if you follow them
