Are there any advantages using Linux for vBulletin ? Please note that the Windows server has newer versions of PHP and MySql.

vBulletin works on both Linux and Windows servers without any known problems.

Actually regardless of the software, what is the hardware. A linux machine with a 133mhz processor would not be better than a Qual Dual Core Opteron Windows machine with SAS SCSI Drives :p

I believe the hardware is the same.
Isnīt the newer version of PHP and MySql more important, than Linux vs Microsoft ?
I could care less about the politics of Microsoft, if the server is better.

Really the hardware and the PHP/MySQL/WEB server is more important. Assuming they have thbe same hardware I'd probally go with the windows machine if you could get thme to update to 5.1.5 and mysql 5.0.23

definitely linux for web serving duties, just more resources and community folks to help you when you have problems - the support base is alot wider for linux than windows for vB use :)

If there is a "latest version" for Windows, FIRST the same program was released for Linux, because Linux is the main release of Apache, Mysql and PHP.
You can have the same versions for Linux and Windows, you dont have newer versions of the softwares only for using Windows.
And last, in windows you waste a lot of resources loading the graphic interface, that you only need from time to time and is loaded ALWAYS, eating memory and processor.
In linux you can choose to not use any graphic interfase and use that Memory and processor power to speed up your webserver or database server.
Any flavor of Linux is the best choice for high performance servers.

Even if you want/need to serve ASP.net and MSSQL apps?
Really its a prefrence, both linux and windows will suite your needs.

Oh, but Iīm talking about shared servers at my host, I will have nothing to do with the server itself.

Btw, do version 5+ of PHP and MySql perform better/faster/more stable than version 4+ on either operating systems ?
