View Full Version : Need a hosting company...

Hi. I just purchased a vB the other day, and now I need to find hosting. It's a smaller board, with only 200+ members, 600+ threads, and 5500+ posts. I've looked through some hosting plans on the top thread in this forum, but they look like they are all for larger boards. Does anyone have a cheap (10-30 bucks, if possible) hosting company with enough space for my board?
Thanks to anyone that helps. :)

I use the Silver hosting package from Site5.com, which costs $6.97 a month, or about $83.64 a year. I get 10 GB of web space and 200 GB of bandwidth. You might consider their Gold hosting package, which is $9.97 a month, or about $119.64 a year. This includes 15 GB of web space and 500 GB of bandwidth.

That actually sounds perfect for my board. Thanks so much! I think I'll go with that then. Cause I can definitely afford it. So thanks a ton! =)

If you did not signeded up yet, check at webhostingtalk.com and search about Site5.
I'm not saying that they are bad, but you'll like to check before signup.

I am planning to purchase a vbulletin and host it on Yahoo hosting. I'd like to know which VB version is compatible with:
PHP: 4.3.11
MY SQL 4.1.12
Thanks in advance.

On the announcement for v3.6 :-PHP and MySQL Requirements
Please note that vBulletin 3.6.0 requires at least PHP 4.3.3 and MySQL 4.0.16 or later. So looks like you'll be ok.
As for the other question on hosting, I trawled through these forums some time ago and Site5 or ASmallOrange came out well recomended by other forum users - so i went for the cheaper :) and pay $50 for the year with ASO

Therefore, even if the PHP is a bit low on the prerequisites given above, V3.6 will still work?
Sorry, i'm a bit of a newb at this xD

No, you should really have at least the required versions.

Then what version would be suggested? Is the new version the only one available for purchase?

You'll have access to previous versions when you buy a license, though it's recommended to ask your host to upgrade PHP and/or MySQL.
The minimum requirements are both about three years old.

Have i missed something blindingly obvious ?

Looks like the host exceeds the vB 3.6 requirements

All version would be compatible, don't worry.
For security reasons and maybe performance, your host should be running php 4.4.4 and Mysql 4.1.21 or better... but you should be fine.

It seems the version check is confused by the 11, for some reason it reads that as being lower than 3.
As far as I know this is a bug on some server setups.

Yes, those forums are fantastic for being able to listen to people in the hosting business talking shop and commenting good or bad about their peers in hosting. :)
-MaGuS-, your situation is like the one I found myself in a few weeks ago.
I administrate several large web sites, and the company that we were using, sold their accounts (including us) to another hosting company who in turn sold us out again. And if that wasn't bad enough the level of service got worse with each new acquired host (like support tickets going 72 hours before I got a reply...if I got a reply).
We also had upgraded our board from UBB to vBulletin 3.5.4, but once 3.6 was released we found that not only were the MySQL and PHP versions out of date, but they were several YEARS out of date for 3.6. I filled out a support ticket asking our web host to upgrade, and two days later I got my response which was they didn't have any plans to upgrade now or anytime in the future.
That was the last straw. I spent about a week looking for a VPS (Virtual Private Server) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPS) host.
Anyway, that week was pretty fruitless in trying to find a good VPS host that stood out in a crowded field, until I found the webhostingtalk.com forum.
I spent about a day and a half reading as much as I could about what people in the hosting industry about their peers.
There were several good recommendations for various hosts, but the one that kept coming up over and over again was KnownHost.com.
Here see for yourself.

(I hope posting links is okay  - if not, please remove them and accept my apology)
We went with their VPS XL for $40 a month plus another $5 for the control panel (Plesk, cPanel, DirectAdmin, Etc.).
They had us setup so quickly and bent over backwards to help us (I haven't had a ticket take more than 30 minutes for a response).
A great example of their service came when we needed a Zend Optimizer for one of our other smaller sites. I simply wanted their advice on which version to download, as our VPS accounts are semi-managed so normally things like that are your responsibility, which is why VPS is great as you have root access and are hamstrung waiting for the tech department to respond. Also, I love not having to share our resources with the like of music downloads, illegal file swappers and the script kiddies that will suck a server's resources dry. Not all VPS hosts give you dedicated resources, but most do which the other reason I like them. With VPS you get most of the benefits of a dedicated server, but without the dedicated hosting price and headaches. ;)
Anyway, it was late on a weekend night when I filled out my support ticket only wanting some advise on which version I should download, and I wasn't really even expecting an answer that night. About ten minutes later I got a reply from KnownHost that said...
Hello,
I've downloaded and installed Zend Optimizer v3.0.1 for you, please check and let us know how everything goes
Thanks,
KnownHost support
So yes, definitely go over to webhostingtalk.com and take a look, and be sure to ask about various hosts including KnownHost. :)
And as far as uptime goes I also came across this review that made me even happier as I didn't see it until after I had already signed up with them.

But I've never been happier with a web host as I have been with them.:)

Site5 has a lot of bad reviews.
Honestly, what percentage of the 10gb web space are you using? and how much bandwidth per month does your account use?

I pay 12.95/month for 75 gb/ unlimited bandwidth from ipower. Of course my server has gone down a couple times, along with a few other minor issues lol.
