First I have to say that we're not currently experiencing any problems with our vBulletin server but, it's been running for over 2 years on the same hardware & software. I think the hardware is still adequate but the software may be too close to the vB minimum specs. I was considering backing up our entire MySql database (mysqldump), reformatting and installing a newer Linux, PHP and MySql.

Should I leave well enough alone or do something?

Our vB has approx:
Threads - 150k
Posts - 1.1M
Members - 22k
Activity - 1k posts/day

Current System:
HARDWARE
------------------
Dual Xeon 2.66
2GB of RAM
4 - 36GB SCSI (15k rpm) in RAID 5

SOFTWARE
------------------
Redhat Fedora Core 1
Linux kernel - 2.4.26
Apache - 2.0.50
PHP - 4.3.10
MySQL - 4.0.20
vBulletin - 3.6.0

Well i'd do the following

1. Upgrade MySQL server to 4.1.21 http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193353
2. Upgrade PHP to 4.4.3 or recompile 4.4.3 after updating MySQL
3. Upgrade to Apache 2.0.59
4. Upgrade to latest stable smp 2.6.x linux kernel

Do one change at a time and test a few days so you can isolate any problems as they pop up
