View Full Version : Favicon does not work with Firefox

The favicon.ico here on vbulletin.com does not work correcltly with Firefox bookmarks.
To duplicate the problem delete any bookmark for vbulletin.com then create a new bookmark:
Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page
Notice how the favicon does not show up.
The problem is with the favicon itself, there are duplicate resolutions. The favicon.ico at vbulletin.org works correctly, perhaps that one could be uploaded here to fix this problem.

The favicon.ico in use here is the same as the one you have in your 3.6 downloads. Do you find that one to be corrupted?

I have made a new user on my system, installed firefox 2 and loaded vbulletin.com - and bookmarked it. It shows in the location bar, in the rss feed and in the bookmark. I can't reproduce this.
Mac OS X 10.4.7 with FireFox 2.0 nightly build.

Yes, I have the same problem with both this forum and my own using the default vB 3.6.0 favicon.

Correct Freddie, it is corrupted too. The problem is with duplicate resolutions. If you use a program like IconEdit32 to edit the favicon it display an error message indicating the duplicate resolutions.

Must be an issue with Firefox and Windows XP then.

Don't forget, once you changed the icon you need to clean your browser cache.... When done, it works just fine :

Please note this thread is about the defective favicon located here on vbulletin.com, it has nothing to do with the custom favicon's people use on their own forums.

Haha, slightly off topic, I have been fighting with the favicon on another forum which stubbornly refused to change no matter how many times I uploaded it - Your query about clearing the browser cache worked a treat...You have no idea how many hours I have spent struggling with this!!!
Cheers :)

The favicon works for us too in all places except the bookmarks. Please verify that the favicon is displayed next to your bookmark.

Not to sound rude or anything, but I'm just curious: Why does everyone want the favicon? I mean, I understand a little on the address bar, but never knew this many people were looking at it in their bookmarks.

Favicon's help direct your eyes to the appropriate bookmarks. When you have many bookmarks it makes finding the right one easier.

Personally I have never seen any browser handle favicons consistently. I think they are a waste of time and energy.

I here ya Steve, they can be very frustrating at times.
I think Firefox does a very good job of displaying them consistently, but there are a few quarks that one needs to know about.
Would it be possible for you to update the favicon here on vbulletin.com? All you have to do is copy the one from vbulletin.org, it works properly.

I don't have access to the server to do that. Besides the one here does work fine on my FireFox.

Are you sure Steve, the bookmark everyone is having problems with is located on the left side of your browser window (ctrl-b). Be sure to delete any old bookmark and create a new one. The favicon will not show up.

I don't use FF very much. There's no way of getting around that this is a browser problem though. As I said I have never seen favicons work consistently in any browser. I really don't think there is much to be gained by spending so much time on this, but that's just me.

I found a Firefox extension that allows me to change the favicon, so my problem is solved.

I still think it would be in the best interest for vBulletin to correct their faulty favicon. :)

There is more than one way to implement favicon and a common problem is that if your cache is cleared you lose the favicons in your bookmarks

did you put the favicon in the directory outside your forums folder. as thats normally the best place to put it

This thread has nothing to do with my favicon, it is dealing with a defective favicon here on vbulletin.com that does not allow the favicon on Firefox to show up next to the bookmark.

Correct Freddie, it is corrupted too. The problem is with duplicate resolutions. If you use a program like IconEdit32 to edit the favicon it display an error message indicating the duplicate resolutions.
IconEdit32 is wrong as there are not duplicate resolutions. It just can't handle the 24b color depth.
16x16x16
16x16x256
16x16x24b
32x32x16
32x32x256
32x32x24b
48x48x16
48x48x256
48x48x24b
The icon at vbulletin.org is simply a 16x16 icon. It also is not the same image.
I can see that the image isn't displayed along with the bookmark but it isn't because the image is invalid or corrupted.

And the reason is here (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=258867).
Our favicon.ico is considered too large to cache.

Our favicon.ico is considered too large to cache.
Thanks for looking into this Freddie and finding the exact reason it doesn't work with Firefox.
Could you simply use the one that vbulletin.org is using, it would make sense to have them be the same favicon anyway.

Considering how often browsers request that file, it should help that this file is now more than 50% of the size that it was.

I've made two themes based on Firefox 2's default theme for Mac OS X that show the favicons in bookmarks toolbar. They're waiting for editor's approval on addons.mozilla.org, but I'll email to you them here if you're too anxious. PM me your email address.
Mac Favicon theme
Firefox 2's default theme for Mac OS X, but with favicons enabled in the bookmarks toolbar! :)
There is a variation of my this theme called; Mac Favicon XL.
Could be useful to use in conjunction with Favicon Picker (When it becomes available for Firefox 2).:)
Mac Favicon XL
Firefox 2's default theme for Mac OS X, but with Xtra Large favicon's and no text in the bookmarks toolbar! :)
This is a variation of my other theme; Mac Favicon.
Mac Favicon XL works best with favicons of 32x32px, (see image). Therefore it is powerful to use in conjunction with Favicon Picker (When it becomes available for Firefox 2).
Installation instructions
PM me your email address, so that I can email it to you
update Firefox to Firefox 2.0 if you haven't already
go Tools > Add ons in Firefox
click and drag the .jar file you downloaded into the Add ons window.
wait for 3 seconds
click install
click on the Themes tab
click on the new theme
click 'Use Theme'
restart firefox
check it out!
Let me know if you have any problems with them. I've tested them both on Firefox 2.0 on Mac OS X 10.4.8.

Looks like the old favicon got put back, it no longer works with Firefox.
