Template reversion and comparison questions

Here's my example and questions...

I had made chages to the postbit template in 3.5.3 and today I upgraded to 3.6.0.

When I compare versions via Admin Control Panel the Old and New versions for each version are the same. BUT when I compare the OLD version of the 3.5.3 template to the NEW version of the 3.6.0 Beta 2 template it shows that the OLD version has text REMOVED FROM THE OLD VERSION.

But when I compare the NEW version of the 3.5.3 template to the OLD version of the 3.6.0 Beta 2 template it shows that the NEW version has text ADDED IN THE NEW VERSION.

Can someone explain that to me? What OLD and NEW versions are they comparing?

Thanks peterska2. I will post my template if I can't figure out how to make the changes myself...which I'm quite sure I can't. But can you or someone explain to me the purpose of the OLD versus the NEW version for a given template?

When I compare the OLD vs NEW version of the same Type of template (see attachment), they are exactly the same.

There must be some purpose for Old vs. New version of the same Type of template but I can't figure what it is.

I always leave them on the default settings, then anything yellow has differences in it, green stuff needs removing, and red stuff needs adding in.

Depending on how modified your template is, this doesn't always work, but it gives you a good idea anyway.

Pasted the code into the postbit template on my test site and looked at it. :)

From there just simply deleted all the duplicated stuff.

I guess practice is probably a big factor though in knowing what to do.:cool:

I normally have the buttons staggered but the Current Version is "Old" and the Current DEFAULT is "New"--that is the default for me BUT that is the opposite of your attachment. But when I change the button stagger to the way you have it, the template differences are reversed (as I would expect) but which way should the stagger be?

If someone could answer this question it might really open up my understanding of the template "History":

Why does each template "TYPE" has an "Old" and "New"? There must be some purpose for this BUT when I compare Current Version 'OLD' vs. Current Version 'New' they are the same. Same thing when I compare Current Default 'Old' vs. Current Default 'New' they are the same.

Then I've been interpreting OLD and NEW incorrectly:o. That means that I provided you with the wrong postbit template in post # 10 of this thread. I gave you what I called the "current" customized version because I thought that was synonymous with "OLD" (since I thought the older template version was the one that was created first).

So if I gave you the OLD Version (Default version) there shouldn't have been any changes to it that you made, is that correct?

I do have some major postbit modifications (via a product) so that is the reason I don't do a straight revert.

Yes. It might be that your vbulletin-style.xml got corrupted or it could be absolutely anything. It could even be something as simple as you accidently pasted again somewhere in the middle of the code when you were posting it.

One last question before I attempt this.

How can my OLD version have red highlighted text (Text removed from old version) but the NEW version doesn't have that text in it? Wouldn't the text need to be in the NEW version in order from it to be removed from the OLD version? Otherwise, how could it exist in the OLD version if it wasn't in the NEW version?

By the way, I think vBulletin should rename OLD to DEFAULT and rename NEW to EXISTING. I think it would be less confusing because were not really talking about dates or time frames....oh well.

I have mine set up like yours--OLD the left and NEW on the right.

I must be misunderstanding something very elementary. Mine says that red is "Text removed from old version." So when you say it needs to be added, do you mean it needs to be added to a reverted template or to my customized template? I tend to think that it doesn't belong in either since it isn't in my NEW/Customized version and it has been removed from the old/default version.

To save my life I can't figure out the template history.

Does it mean that I have removed content from the Old or New version?

The content has been removed from the new version, so you need to add it as this is required (in most cases).

Green (content added), is content that has been added to the new version, so you need to remove it as it is no longer required code (in most cases).



The reason I have said "in most cases" is because if your templates have been significantly altered, or re-written, then it can show (and does) the whole custom template as green (for removal) and the whole original template as read (for addition).

A few differences result in the yellow code for replacement.

But for some reason when I view a thread in my messageboard, all of the replies are 'nested' in the first post. Similiar to how the private messaging quoted replies look. hmmmm

I cannot reproduce that. Did you copy all of the code? You may wish to click quote on the post to ensure that you copy it all correctly.
