But it's very active! 9 members and 1 visitor (me) when I visited. I like your board esp. the anon image. How did you do that? Is there a special layout for anon users?

I just put some code in that checks if the user is a guest and displays that Anon.gif http://www.hedgehogwheels.com/forums/images/avatars/anon.gif and if they are known then it displays their avatar from my avatar hack. Go register and check it out! I am still working on the pagation part when displaying avatars to choose from but other than that it is finished.

49 members, 4 active.

It's quality that counts! And even a community of a few people is good, no?

Better point, Shoe

Yes, but if you have more members, you are likely to have more that produce quality.

I know... endless discussion coming up ;)

39 members, most of 'em refugees from a war at a previous forum, and I never even finished hacking up my templates. Le sigh.

Leah, I love your boards. Previously, were-here is the only site that I've seen that could pull off the gray/black background - you have succeeded as well. I love all the "alt" tags for homepage, email, etc. Very creative ;). Plus I really dig the layout changes that you've done - very cool. I understand completely the whole refugee thing - that's what my board was (is). Good shtuff.

I only read one post, and it was a *sparkling* rendition of an old depeche mode song. I was afraid to read on after that ;). j/k

*grins* Wow. Thanks. Sincerely, thanks. Almost makes me want to put nose to grindstone and clean up those templates. But never mention werehere and I again in the same sentence. I'M UNWORTHY! *Wayne's World-type bowing*

Lol, it's funny you say that - looking at your boards did make me put my "nose to the grindstone" and update the look of my forums. I've now integrated them into the rest of the site like they should be. It's only taken a good 4 hours or so to reverse all my colors :).

Thanks for the inspiration!

How do you get so many members in so little time?

eva2000
Sat 29th Jul '00, 2:30pm
not sure how mike managed it, but for me the forum is used as a home for all my anime related sites - so 3 - 8 of my sites all pointing their forums to Animeboards... then there's a mailing list and free email users :D

wajones-
Why don't you try a banner link exchange. I know that microsoft does one called bcentral.

On another note my wonderful vbb has 16 members. Yeah, it's stuggling, but after the idea catches on, I hope it'll be like the rest of your sites with 20, 000 members. (dare I dream) Advertising is very hard, but in my opinion to get people to your site, you need great word of mouth.

oh yeah, one word of advice for increasing member base...... be present on your boards daily, interact and participate

the more time you are there yourself, the more time members stay ... my first day the forum was online... i had members and me on the forum for 9 hrs straight !

Interesting point. To me what's important is not so much the number of users as the user/post ratio. This board has a ratio of 35.4 posts per member. How do we get our smaller communities to post?

I like your board alot too. What hacks are you using? What is the hack called that provided the folders uptop? Your board is Very very nice!

Thu 3rd Aug '00, 6:17am
yeah my forum has a post/user ratio of nearly 49 posts per registered member, and 60-70% of registered members haven't made their first post

for me the secret is to have members who have as little of life as i do and spend 6-8hrs a day on my forums :lol

Shoe,

Not using any hacks, just the raw vB 1.1.3b3 scipts and some mightily tweaked templates. And I still haven't finished...sigh.

Anyway, the UBB-style folders at the top is a simple template change...if you're really interested, you can either pinch the code from my source or I'll post it for ya in the Templates forum. Lemme know.

Must...finish...tweaking...before...the true millennium....

Yes! Could you post some of your templates! They're very nice. :) BTW how hard is it to keep your tweaks after upgrading--or is that not a problem.

Thanks.

[Edited by Shoe on 08-05-2000 at 11:51 AM] i know what you are thinking, cause i thought the same too... i was worried that on upgrading, you loose the template file's html coding... well you don't have to worry the upgrade overwrites the php files not the templates... i noticed no change in my forum's custom layout after upgrading from 1.1.3 to 1.1.3 beta 3
