View Full Version : Is vBulletin free?

I've been wanting to make a vBulletin board for some time now, but was wondering if it was free, or it costs money. The thing is, at a young age, I'm not able to purchase anything from the Internet. I also presume vBulletin is American, which is even more difficult for me to find out about due to my Australian heritage. I've tried other forum hosters, but I don't like any of them, so that's why I've come here to find out if this great vBulletin is free or not. So, is vBulletin free, or does it cost money?

If you have a birthday coming up soon, why not ask your parents for a vBulletin license?

That's a good idea, but my mum wouldn't let me. Especially if it's only avilable for purchase over the Internet. I could always ask my nanna, since this is her computer. Then again, if vBulletin is American, that makes things alot more difficult, as I live in Australia and we have different currency here.

I just had my fifteenth birthday awhile ago.:D

Currency shouldn't be a problem if you use PayPal or something similar.

Hey mate, I saw this and thought 'I gotta comment'. I'm aussie too :D

vBulletin has 2 payment options
-Leased licence - $85 [1 year, after that period you cannot have your vBulletin board on the internet unless you pay another $85]
-Owned licence - $160[your forever and ever, you can have it publically presented on the internet till after you die, lol].

Being in australia you will have to work out the conversion, and unfortunatly it is more expensive. As a guide I usually add another quarter to the original cost.

So:
Leased: $106
Owned: $200
- Use as a rough guide for Australian Purchases only.

I was using invisionFree for a couple of months before I moved to vBulletin. Invision did the job, but it's just those little 'features' in vBulletin that you get used to, and invision just never seems good enough. The money I put into vBulletin to get my owned licence is something I don't regret. The support is great, and the updates never stop coming...

If it's possible, present, or parents, I would highly recommend the vBulletin software. However I also understand your situation...

If vBulletin isn't a financial option, then I hope you find suitable forum software.

Kurt

Paypal still works out the conversion rate... A rough guide to Australian prices is in my post above...

I never said it didn't. I was simply stating the fact that when using PayPal currency is really not an issue.

FYI, Jelsoft is a UK based company, not a U.S. based company.

Why donīt just use a nice free forum code, like http://www.simplemachines.org/ - when you have build a good community and saved some money, you can move everything over to a vBulletin.

It's impossible for me to save up money, as most of my money would go towards video games. I'd love to get a vBulletin forum, but it seems quite hard to get one.

Jelsoft (The people who make vBulletin) do not host the software for you. Their product only offers the software package and you'd need to find a web host as well as purchase a vBulletin license in order to use vBulletin.

Also, currency really isn't an issue over the internet, not when paying by credit card anyway. I am from the UK and I purchase things that are priced in USD on a regular basis. The same applies for all developed countries.

Well, no one in my family has a credit card. Web host...? I've been trying to look for a free web host, but with no luck at all. It seems everything on the Internet costs money, money which I don't have.

If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's this:

Nothing comes free.

Well, lesson learned.

Regardless .. vBulletin does cost money as we're selling it commercially and we can't offer you any discounts unless you purchase in bulk.

You can place an order here: http://www.vbulletin.com/order/

Thank you for your interest in the vBulletin forum software and we're looking forward to your purchase. Please let me know if you have any further pre-sales questions.

There are a lot of crazy people out there, because a *Lot* of people bought the software... Check out a free message board, you will be happy playing around with it, and it won't cost you anything.

Most of the free forums I've tried to use are very complicated! I've tried heaps of different forum hosts, but I never stick with them because I have no knowledge of HTML, CSS etc. That's why I never keep them, as HTML and CSS can help make them look better. vBulletin looks easy, that's why I want to use it.

vBulletin is certainly NOT a rip-off. You get what you pay for. And that's quality software, and quality support.

Finding a host and uploading vBulletin is easy, my dog could do it! Although, you cannot get vBulletin for free. There are free web hosts out there, but these are generally not recommended for hosting dynamic scripts such as bulletin board software.

No vBulletin is not free. vBulletin is a UK company not American. It won't be a problem if you pay in English pounds or American Dollars, it will still take the same amount f money out of your account but in the currency you have.

You can see the prices here.

I was 15 when I started my website too. I had to do what the others said, save up money for a while until I could afford a better solution than phpBB. I ended up with a vBulletin license a year later. :)

Don't say "each" if you only plan on getting one (to start, anyway). Would it help for you to know that most other message board licenses cost much more than vBulletin, in your financial terms? ;)

<raises hand>

I did.

Twice.

Best money I ever spent.

I would do as some of the others have suggested. Get a free forum package like SMF and establish a user base. Then let the users know that you are considering upgrading to Vbulletin and that it costs a lot of money. They may offer to donate some cash to help you get it. My users did.

Good luck!
