Closing forum before doing repair & optimise

Is it advisable to close the forum before repairing and optimising tables, or before repairing the database through cpanel?

I would recommend this to prevent data loss. MySQL will be locking tables during the process.

Thanks - I have always closed the forum to do it so far, but having recently moved host and now having the ability to do it through cpanel - just wanted to check I wasn't closing unnecessarily.
