View Full Version : How to handle nameserver change when moving

I am planning to move my board to a new hosting provider. I was wondering what the recommended approach is for handling the nameserver change, specifically the transition period in which some users still arrive at the old site.
I was thinking if it would be possible to redirect users that arrive at the old site to the new site by using the new site's IP address information. Is this a valid approach? Any other ideas?

That's exactly what I've done in the past.

Thanks a lot. This sounds like a reasonable approach. I will soon move from GoDaddy Shared Hosting to ASO (A Small Orange) shared hosting...

What are all the settings that need to be changed when moving to a new server, and specifically while accessing the new board by IP address only.
I know config.php needs to be adjusted. Is there anything else?

The Forum URL might have to be updated, and I'd set the Cookie Domain to (blank).
Both are in your vBulletin Options.

A trick i have used in the past is to select a time when it would have the least impact ie midnight turn off your board change the name servers and depending on who you registered your domain name with it should in most cases have propagated to the new server by morning.
