Do you have kids? If so, do you have software installed to protect them while online?
My 13 year old son has done a little suspicious surfing lately. :p
I'd like something that works well to block adult content, and also allows me to control when and how long he can use the computer.
Looking for good and bad experiences.
Thanks, Cliff

Google is always a good place to start (http://www.google.com/search?q=adult+content+filters&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official)
There are tons of filters out there, each a little different from the others. I'm not sure about free ones, though. Most seem to be on a subscription basis.

omg, why? i think all that spying on your kids is wrong, because i know software if you realy want it that will even give you the passwords they type and everything they do.

I have found that MSN Premium fits the needs I have it providing my children a safe internet experience. It sits ontop of my current ISP and is installed on their computer. If they try to browse to a sit that isn't approved it stops them and sends me an email. I can approve it in the email if I want or I can enter my password directly into their PC to allow it. It also controls MSN and email. Finally it allows different profiles for each kid and for guests using the computer. For instance my 14 year old son has more permissions than my 10 year old daughter. Guests as well are prevented from using IM programs, downloading or storing cookies on the machine.

You do realize one can lock down a machine better than whoever did for this instance you're bragging about, right?

If the emails / requests stop then you'll know they have your password.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to start a discussion like this, I was just looking to see what others have tried and liked / disliked. I know I can Google, I was looking for real users and their opinions.

I hope that what Wayne and I suggested helps you out in some way. You should give MSN Premium a try.

I recall one such program that restricted the amount of time you spent on the computer... But I can't remember the name. I'll think on it and post it when I remember.

It's not so much the porn, it's the other areas associated with it that might lead a predator to your child.
Personally, I wouldn't care if my kid looked at porn; it's a natural part of growing up. I don't want them, however, having access to websites that might endanger them or make them a target for some kind of pervert.

Because what can be seen on the Internet would be deelply disturbing to a child. Porn included. Isn't it kind of obvious?
It's that kind of attitude that makes a lot of young people the way they are today. I would say I myself am in the minority.

Wow.. i have a control that was givin by my internet provider and i can block any sites and and suppose to shut the windows down. or the computer. i really havent looked into it but thats what i was told by my provider..
but if i find my son surfing sites that he knows hes not suppose to be at one click and his computer will be gone.. lucky hes still young for really surfing those kinds of sites. but the parental controls are awsome to have..

this is what mine does
What Are Parental Controls?
Parental Controls is a set of tools that allow you to put limits on what each child in your family can do and see online. You can create individual, password-protected accounts for each child in your family to:
Restrict types of web sites, as well as specific web sites, that your children can access. Control the amount of time they spend online. Specify with whom they can exchange email while using their AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet accounts. Restrict with whom they can exchange instant messages while using AT&T Yahoo! Messenger.
Allow permission slips asking for access to other web sites or communication with other friends.

Hardcore OR softcore, pornography is not suitable for kids. Call me "old fashioned".
