Each new feature and option and variable and phrase might only work if they are in your customized templates. So if they don't work.. you will need to revert that template and re-apply your customization ..

Nope doesn't show in IE either (I'm on about the quick edit button - when you click on it there's no animation)
Also, another side note, can we ditch the link to the thread/post everytime someone is quoted? (or at least make it an acp option?) It's really bad for seo.

It's definately not showing Zach, I'm not on about the one when you click on save mind (that shows ok), just the one on showthread page, when you click on 'edit' on one of your posts.
Also, another bug... I just unsubscribed to this thread but am still getting notifications (maybe because I replied in it again since?)

3.6 looks Great! When thinking about upgrading to it, a couple of thoughts come to mind that would make upgrading easier:
When turning off a feature in the ACP, say Private Messaging or the new multiquote, any reference to that feature should dissappear from the user interface as well. If private messaging is disabled, why put up an option for a user to send a private message or configure their private message options, that just tells them private messaging has been turned off? Thanks!
I'll be very curious to hear about which templates have been changed and how much they have been changed. Upgrading a customized board is a lot of work!
Which brings me to another point - it would be good if the templates were split up even more - with each template only a page or less. Long templates - such as forumhome could be broken up into multiple parts so that any customizations to a style can overwrite as small a piece of the code as possible.
Thanks!

It seems that vB 3.6 has added a lot of new features, such as multi-quote and quote trackback, that were already present in IPB. However, that's not a bad thing. In the end, both systems are now even better, thanks to the competition.
So... The first beta release is coming in a few weeks, eh? Will there be a new GDK that includes some of the new images?
MJM
Wed 31st May '06, 3:53pm
Very cool! Yeehaw!
... one thing I can't see but hope it gets in is ...
Admin ability to select time allowed to edit posts on a forum by forum basis per usergroup.
For example, if I was posting a list into to a thread titled ...
Top 10 things that I'd like to see in vB 3.6 at a 3.6 Beta Forum, hint hint ...
I'd want to be able to revise or re-order my list as I reviewed others posts during the time allotted ...
In another context this method could be used to gather info towards the creation of a poll.
For my own site this would be very helpful in group-info gathering forums and to provide extra time to let members compose their posts and cultivate their introduction or topical portfolia.
Just in case my wish doesn't come true ...
Anyone know if this available as a mod for 3.5?
Thanks,
Mark

I meant as a built-in feature, one that came stock. I didn't mean this as a bad thing. I was just saying that vB and IPB are now even closer feature-wise, which will make both products better in the end. That's all.

One quick thing I'm confused on. When you send a PM to multiple people, they don't know who else the PM was sent to -- it only lists them as the receiver. So what exactly is the point of the BBC feature in the PM? It was already hidden originally.
(Not bashing the feature or anything -- just trying to understand, as I'm sure I'm missing something somewhere. :))

I don't want to make a bug report about it as I might be missing something, but on page 2 of this thread (posts 16-30), you'll notice several quoted posts without the link back to the original post. It allows you to designate keywords which act as quick searches. Then when a post contains that keyword, it gets added to the search. They are very popular in blogs.

I believe that 3.6.0 is already pretty much feature locked. All the new features will be announced over the next week or so. Feature suggestions should go in the appropriate forum and will be reviewed for future versions.

And ditto to hoping to see improvements in the forums subscription types as well as a user-friendly subscriptions management pageDitto again! For instance it would be great if the user could go to one page a see all the fora there with radio buttons for their subscription level for each forum all in one place! It would also nice to see an HTML email option.

Here's another couple of nits guys (any parents out there know what a "nit" is?)
1) Now that you got the window size adjustment buttons correctly located above the message editing window, how about making them affect the width too, like they do in the ACP?
2) The thread navigation controls: « Previous Thread | Next Thread »
Should be correctly ;) positioned at top of a thread, along side the Reply button, so that they stay in the same place making it easy to go from thread to thread, rather than having to scroll to the bottom of thread each time to find them!

Not that I use either, but wasn't threaded and hybrid mode selectable here before? Seems it's off.
Edit: Recieve PM's only from buddies in Control Panel. Cool, but I would hope the Administrator can control the option of members to use that (and also that it doesn't stop Mods or Admins from sending them).

Currently there is a conflict between multi-quote and hybrid/threaded mode. You can only have one or the other enabled.

Currently there is a conflict between multi-quote and hybrid/threaded mode. You can only have one or the other enabled.
Could we make this a user option then?
If users want to have threaded/hybrid mode (there are plenty around who do) at the expensive of multi-quote, then let them. Most users, however, will want multi-quote and don't care about threaded/hybrid. However, it's unfair to punish those who would rather have threaded/hybrid mode instead of multi-quote just because the admin wants most users to use the new feature... this way all users benefit: they can pick which feature is more important to them instead of the admin (of course, only if the admin has both features enabled).

Oh, and the Forum Jump list box should also be at the top of the thread, alongside the previous/next links. It's too handy of a feature to be buried ad the bottom of the page!
In my book, these kinds of minor tweaks can have as big or bigger effect on usability as the next whiz-bang feature, not that we don't all love whiz-bang features!

Which brings me to another point - it would be good if the templates were split up even more - with each template only a page or less. Long templates - such as forumhome could be broken up into multiple parts so that any customizations to a style can overwrite as small a piece of the code as possible.
Thanks!
I think that in the long run this would make things more complex and not easier.
I disagree... more granular templates are something I'm looking into for a future version.
I know I already have a hard enough time keeping track of all the templates. But I was only voicing my opinion :)
Please please please, no more splitting of the forumhome templates! It's bad enough as it is trying to figure out where something went wrong with the number of splits there are in it. Or if you are going to, move the whats going on to it's own, but leave it at that.

Testing multiquote.
Ok, so that's multiquote by clicking on the new buttons.
So vBulletin still doesn't allow quoting of multiple quotes within a single message?
For example, this post I've just made contains 4 quotes which I've had to manually select.
In most other forums, if I were to now quote this post, I'd get all of these quotes in my new reply, and on and on ad infinitum.
Having run a large Invision board which has been recently shifted to vBulletin, all of my members are having difficult following discussions because you can only auto-quote to one level. If there is a huge thread which (in Invision) contains many embedded quotes, you can't do that in vBulletin.
Multiquoting with these new tags is almost there, but not quite.

Hey, I'm new to skinning for vB, and was wondering if a big update like this would be hard to convert for (from 3.5.4 to 3.6)? Is it possible to use the code from the older version of the skin, and update the skin with just the newer code that needs to be added? Are there instructions on exactly what to add/etc.? Thanks, and great job on the software! :)
Hey Adam, isn't there an option for that in the admin cp? If not, I agree that there should be an option to see all the quotes, so that discussions would be easier to follow. ;)

I've just tidied up all my test quotes in this thread (sorry, they should have been in the testing forum), but I agree - there should be a simple admin control to allow for the quote depth to be controlled. Every other forum software I have used allows automatic quoting of multiple embedded quotes, but vBulletin strips them out for some reason. The new multiquote button is half-way there, but it's still not quite right.

If there was some way to combine them all if you wanted to (ie. insert all the tempaltes into the correct place, then have vB separate them again on saving), then it'd be welcomed.
Sometimes I only want to change a small small part of a page, and it'd be useful to be able to edit just the one part and leave the rest default (and thus auto-updating on new releases etc).

Btw : I absolutely love this new trackback-functionality in VB 3.6.0 Beta1!
I just replied (with quote) to a posting of Barry (which was on page 9).
You know that in previous versions of VB you would be 'transported' to the end of the thread when you added a reply. Ofcourse this is still the same naturally, but the big difference is, is that I can now go back to the posting which I read last!!! Clicking on this trackback arrow in the posting I quoted brings me back to the page in the thread were I left off reading! In previous versions of VB I had to remember on what page (page 9) I left off reading, because by quoting a posting there I was transported to the end of the thread and had to go back manually to page 9 (if I had not forgot the page that is) to read all the next pages.
Well... I hope I make sense. ;) Again : brilliant feature this! Does wonders for the userfriendlyness! Top!

WRT to the PM Preview feature:
Private Message Preview in Notification Emails
If you have elected to receive emails when receiving a new private message, the email will now contain more than just the name of the user who sent you the message. The title and body of the message will be included. Any BB codes in the message will automatically be converted to an equivalent plaintext version using the new plaintext bbcode parser.
My only issue with this is, it breaks down the concept of "Read Receipts" as folks can read the PM in email and not actually have to log in to read it on your forum. That may also remove some incentive to log in.
So my question is, is this enabled on a per-usergroup level?

Hi,
This is no critising at all on this function, but I would like to know what exactly is the purpose of this information? Is it (bytes) for low-bandwidth users so they can decide to click on it or not? Why is it beneficial to know the width and height? I understand other forumpackages also have this function, so can somebody explain it to me? Possibly so that styles don't break. If you have a fixed width style and an image that is larger than the postbit is uploaded, it expands the box adding horizontal scroll to the site. The same applys for fluid widths on small resolutions. Also there is the fact that large image drastically reduce page load times so having them all a set size enables the pages to load faster and therefore be more dial-up friendly.

hmm u can't multi quote and click quick reply???? that's really odd!!i really hoped that Xenon's version of multi-quote would've been incorperated, i REALLY liked having all the quotes available in the quick editor. also hopefully for beta 2 we'll see the arrows aligned with the text better.
Nice to see the plugins sorted by product now, even if it does make one of my hacks redundant. :Di'm not sure how i feel about this, while it would've been nice to have in two clicks, by default, it'd be nicer to disable by location.

Phrase Types Identified By Field Name Only
This is something that will no doubt interest those of you who modify vBulletin. The phrasetypeid column in the phrasetype table has been removed. Phrase types are now uniquely identified by the fieldname.
I don't really understand what this means :o Could someone clear this up?
Does it mean it goes off of a prefix or soemthing like that?

Previously, phrasegroups had a number identifying them. Now they're identified by the actual phrasegroup name. It doesn't affect a user or admins experience at all, it's really only for coders.
Well good for you
Sorry, I couldn't resist :)

It is a database optimization. There should be no change in how phrases actually work in the system.

We don't have a column that shows the date a thread was started. If an option was added to the select box to sort by thread start date then the header row above the thread list that details each column would be missing the indicator that displays which column is being sorted by. How would you choose to resolve that?

I would think that vBulletin still recommends upgrading to the latest available version, 3.6, although it would be interesting to see if vBulletin 3.5.x will still be simultaneously developed (for security updates etc ..) or just "compiled" into vBulletin 3.6.x

I appreciate not everyone would use it - but I think for many of your serious users who like to use vB in as many different areas as possible (ie not just the forums) it would be a welcomed addition. At the moment I use a plug-in to do it - but would really like to use as few plug-ins as possible to keep the set-up as efficient as possible.
Perhaps you could just add the necessary code to the php file then and anyone who like me needs that functionality just needs to add it manually in the template? (It would also be cool to add being able to call $datethreadposted in the forumdisplay page too, but that's not a must although would be very helpful for blog/article/news sections ;)). Again not everyone would need it but it's there for your more serious/flagship users. In addition, it will make it a lot easier for future plug-ins (either from yourself or 3rd parties) to easily utilize vB for blogs/articles etc without having to move away from the vanilla vB system too much - I use vB to power __everything__ on my site (!) articles, news (and other sections soon). Every article and news item is a thread, so all of my users posted comments etc add to their post count, and although I don't use it, things like rate this thread etc will still be able to be used. And it's so unbelievably close to stock vB you just wouldn't believe it! (Can pm you the link if you want to see it ;))
I also think it would be a shame not to have the ability to sort by date posted as I think many people requesting that feature wanted to use it for this reason?..
(Please Freddie!)

3.5.x will only get security and major bug fixes.

I doubt it as (IMO) SEO is modern day snake oil for the most part and what little that is true flucuates very often. I don't think Jelsoft has the team to support the ever changing world of SEO. SEO friendly URLs only work on some set-ups and don't see it being a viable product for Jelsoft, or as viable as other products would be.

I just read the announcement (part 2)... hm... vBulletin 3.6 is definetly sparking plenty more interest than 3.5 did. There's still more to be announced too... c'mon Jelsoft, now you're just spoiling us. ;) :p
How hard will it be to port 3.5.4 skins to 3.6?
I think it depends on how heavily modified your skin is.
Why not use AJAX when clicking "Mark Forums Read"?
I like that idea quite a bit.

I think it will be interesting to see if vB 2.x is still maintained.
Like today, for major bugs and security fixes (or maybe like vB 1.x :p) ;)
3.5.x will only get security and major bug fixes.
vBulletin 3.5 has only 4 updates for security fixes, instead vBulletin 3.0.x which has 14 updates for security fixes......
I think there is no more security fix for vBulletin 3.5. And this is good for the vBulletin 3.6 code (less than 4 updates :p) ;)

i was hoping this kinda quote function is similiar to phpbb
if i was trying to quote a post that has another quote in it, it would quote both of them
like this
haha i find this game is fun
really? i enjoy it too!
i wish that would works when i click the quote button, and quick to reply button, rather than just quoting only that post

The waring system is going to aleviate a lot of work in terms of how we manually do things now with creating threads in the staff section and sending PMs for infractions, as well as trying to keep up who with what users has been warned for what. This is a significant and very welcome addition, as are many of the other features so far revealed. Very happy to be a vBulletin customer right now, we're getting so much for our money, keep up the hard work.

With the multi-quote, does the quotes you select show up in the quick reply so that we can reply to each quote instead of the replies been under all the quotes you quote?
ie is it like this so we can see the selected quote to reply too?;
