View Full Version : Suggestion: Option to give the right to post topics after x posts

This would be a great feature IMO. At my board new members are spreading topics which has been discussed several times in other posts. So they annoy the hardcore members by posting double topics.
If you can restrict the right to post a topic when a member has posted x posts he knows the 'rules' better when he deserves that right because he has been around longer at the board.
Also a good suggestion: A checker which checks if a given topic isn't discussed allready. Something like he searches if the topic isn't similar to allready existing ones and then he gives a warning if the user wants to make it a new topic or a reply onto the existing topic.
A topic-rater would also helpfull; If a member is rated bad frequently he would think twice before opening a double or bad topic again.
This would make a lot of annoyed members happier I think :)

do it with usergroups - usergroup 1, posts 0-50, cannot post but can reply/read

Geez, you're right...Didn't think of that at all...:D
Thanks!
The other 2 suggestions still stand btw :)

One question about the user-groups: How do you make sure a certain user is assigned to a group you created?
Is the 'User Status
Use this to override the default 'ladder' of user status titles' field to accomplish this? So if I fill in "Junior Member" in this field all users with # of posts from 0-30 will be assigned to this group? Or is it something else?
The problem is it should be done automaticly...There's no use in manually assign each new user with this group and assign another group once they have their permission...
Please explain this to me, it isn't very clear how to make use of newly created groups...

I don't think it would be that hard to do, but I can't think of a way to do it without having to manually assign the people to a "newbie" group upon arrival then manually bumping them up to a "not so newbie" group after the required posts have been made. Seems like too much work to me.
the other option you would have is relating the permissions to the user titles. this, of course, would require a hack, though it doesn't seem to be a hard one.
for my board, all I can see is something like this further alienating newbies. how are they supposed to intriduce themselves if they can't start a "hi, I'm new here" topic?
if we were to vote on whether to make something like this a board feature instead of a hack I would have to vote against.
on a side note, relating to your original post, it has always cracked me up the way BBS communities act. When a person is new they are going to go through a period of initial shyness, make some mistakes, get the older hands mad at them. Then, when they've been there a while, they will be pouncing on the newbies with the older hands like they never did the same thing. There is a definite pecking order to BBS's.
I've been on BBS's since the days of 2400 baud modems and there was, basically, no internet, and that's been a constant thing:)

Maybe you're right, but what about this idea:
You can assign a usergroup depending on the number of posts. This way it could be done PLUS you get alot more flexibility...
What do y'all think?

I like that idea. Would eliminate the need for the "default usergroup" idea :D
AND it would add more flexibility
