I was hoping that this version would allow private forum the way UBB does. Private forums in UBB are password-protected .... but when a user posts in the private forum, his/her ID gets attached to the post.

My situation is that I have a site with a general topic discussion forum. But I want to offer client organizations their own private forum WITHIN the general public one. And I want individual posters to that private forum to have his/her ID attached to his/her post.

As far as I understand, the only solution is for me to subscribe everyone as a moderator. Thus, if there are 60 potential users of the private forum, there would be 60 moderators! Not an elegant solution!

Is there a way around this contraint?

You can edit the access masks for the users to allow them accessing this one board... that way is much more secure because no password is needed which could get public...

I don't think there will be a day a password field

Actually, we are looking at ways to incorporate this into vB 2.1

Kier,

When do you anticipate version 2.1 to be released?

You can also manage this by creating a group that can access the private forum. I have several groups that have their own private forum. No one else even sees it.

HOWEVER!

With the way that vbulletin uses cookies, this is not as secure as people think! If you have users that share a computer, the cookie system makes it extremely easy for people to get into each other's account. See my other thread for thoughts on how to close this loophole:

IRC,

Thanks very much for the solution....much more elegant than what I came up with!

Just one more thing, did you have to manually register everyone in your private forum? I mean, when someone volunteers to register to the message board, this user is automatically assigned to the "Registered" group...not to the group specially created for that private forum. Did you figure out a way for a registrant to choose what group they want to be assigned to?

Grateful,
Woodsong

Yes, I manually put each person into the proper group. A hack that allowed users to choose their group would be interesting, but I would think most admins would want to approve user group changes.

I just wanted to add that I would love to see password protection as a new option in 2.1. There is no doubt that doing this by user groups and permissions is more secure, but right now, I am having to manually move users to certain groups and this can be an un-needed hassle.
