Question deleted: I found out through trial and error that I needed to move the messages in Discus first.

The Discus board structure that causes problems is as follows:
Topic 1
subtopic (containing threads) 1
'sub-subtopic' (thread) 1...178
subtopic (ordinary thread containing posts) 2
Importing this as-is to Vbulletin results in all the 'sub-subtopic'-type threads being strung together into one huge thread.
Solution:
before exporting from Discus, move things round. Create a new topic in topic manager, then use page manager to move all the sub-subtopic threads from the old subtopic to the new topic. Then delete your empty subtopic.
