View Full Version : Run Vbulletin without database?

I bought a domain and signed up for hosting with ixwebhosting. I was told Vbulletin would work. I have the Expert Plan (https://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/home.dspPage/page/info.dspExpertPlan). Tonight I put the test script out there and it was asking for the MySQL information which I didn't have. A rep told me I'd find it in my control panel but it wasn't there. I asked yet another rep about this and then he told me that I could run Vbulletin "without the database" or upgrade my plan.
I don't know what that means that I could run it without the database. Can someone explain that and what would be different. If it requires it, then I don't see how I could run it without it. It's probably a stupid question but I don't understand it. Thanks.

vBulletin cannot be run without a database. That rep is talking rubbish.

Ok so I guess if I double my payment to them I can have SQL support.
In their description of that plan it says:
If you need databases for your website, both mySQL and PostgreSQL is available with the Business Plus, allowing you to have up to 50 databases of each type. Using your Control Panel (https://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/home.dspPage/page/info.dspControlPanel), you will be able to create, delete and manage your databases and database users in real-time.
Is that going to allow me to run it?

Is that going to allow me to run it?Yes.
You would need their Business Plan.
Damn they are cheap. A little too cheap for my comfort.
It looks like they are overselling.
300GB for 6.45/month is cheap.
I hope you did some research on them.
They have already given you bad advice in that you can run vB without a database.

I would recommend taking note of this. It is incredibly inconvienient, and expensive, to end up with a poor host and have to move. There prices just seem too good to be true. They have lots of unpleaseant reviews for hosting MySQL sites here: Webhosting Unleashed (http://www.webhostingunleashed.com/reviews/ix-webhosting-reviews.htm) which is a great site for checking out the quality of a host. They do seem like an average host to me :(
Believe me, I have fallen for offers that look amazing before and ended up with all sorts of agro. Make sure you do plenty of research, mate. Good luck.

After reading a good many of those reviews I'm wondering if they might put you on a lowly loaded server for the first 30 days until your "unconditional money back guarantee" runs out and then dump you into overload hell afterwards. I'm wondering if I should just jump ship before I move forward with this.

I am paying $24.95 for 50Gb of bandwidth and 2Gb of hard drive space.
Support is good.
You probably don't need 50Gb but you need a company that you can grow with.

WebHostingUnleashed has a cheap one rated really highly.

They charge extra for a dedicated IP but everything else looks ok and I may can do without the IP though I'd like to have it.

400 Gigabytes Data Transfer for $6.95/month.
I guess I'm just suspicous by nature.

There are quite a few good reviews of ixwebhosting out there as well. I may upgrade and stick it out to see if it works or not. Nothing teachs like experience, eh? :)

I get suspicous about reviews too. They can be fake.
I usually base my decision on how quick they respond to sales questions.

These days almost any shared hosting solution comes with PHP and MySQL. These two are required for vBulletin.

So does anyone here actually have ixwebhosting and like it?
Anyone know of an unbiased review site? It's really worthless to read many of the reviews as some seem scripted. They are polar opposites and about equal in number. Anyone have a recommendation on a good host that works well with Vbulletin?

I have had and hated it, same with a couple of my clients. This was not for anything as intense as vB either, just a small php/MySQL site with low traffic. Horrible performance and stability... I cancelled after a few months and moved on.
I've either had my own accounts, or smaller client accounts, over at Liquid Web (http://www.liquidweb.com) for several years now using their smaller shared accounts with no issues. The past year has been great since I moved everything there, but I do have a dedicated box with them now... :D

Was this recently? In other words, could they have had a chance to improve?
I'm really grasping at straws I know....everyones chanting "leave, leave!" :)
I just don't want to leave and go on to a bigger mistake. Thanks for the tip!

In the several years being hosted by several different companies I have jumped ship rather than be dragged down with a host. I'm not willing to wait it out for a host to get their act together unless there are some hardware issues that they let me know about and keep me informed of their progress. Things do happen but I spend too many hours managing and reading my board to worry about some host.

At this point I'm seriously considering switching to HostGator. However, their TOS states that you can't use more than 25% of the CPU for more than 90 seconds or you get canned. Anyone khow big or small a VB site would have to be in order to violate that? HostGator says 50-60 users would be no problem and would not.

I use this host: http://www.299host.net/hosting.htm
He provides good email support and it appears to be a fairly fast connection. I have had only minor downtimes very rarely, but then really my forum doesn't get too much traffic so I cannot judge how it would suit your needs.

I've never heard of that particular hosting company, but that doesn't mean much. There are thousands out there that lots of people haven't heard of.
I will say this though: the rep who told you that you don't need a database to run vBulletin obviously has no idea what he's talking about. I would take that as a sign to RUN FOR IT!
I use ontimehosting.com, they're pretty decent so far. Have 3 sites through them.
