Hello, Is the next vBulletin version going to be a big update?

Because its almost been two months since the last update.

If there it is going to be a big update, will there be new system requirements? so i can update my server if needed.

No-one really knows, the development team might have some idea. If a major bug is suddenly found in 3.5.4, then there will be a 3.5.5 release, but i wouldnt count on it.
I would say thats its more than likely 3.6 will be the next release, as for when, your guess is as good as mine.. :)

Refer to:

Many threads in there refer to the next major release. :)

I have no clue to be honest, just a personal guess here:

I think 3.5.x will be bug fix release + perhaps a security fix if there's an issue with 3.5.4, and otherwise the next one will be 3.6.

Going from 3.5 to 3.6 means quite a bit of the code has changed, meaning new features, new options, enhanced code and tweaked functions. Bug fixes and improved everything.

Then again, seeing how they jumped from 3.0. to 3.5, who knows what they have in store for us.

Would that mean most plugins for 3.5 would not work?

Good question. I will let a dev reply to that one :)

IDN:

I'm not a developer, but no, that would probably not be the case.

vBulletin 3.0 -> vBulletin 3.5 was a very large rewrite, going from normal to OOP code. Because of this alot of functions changed and variables alike, breaking compatibility and such. I would not really think they would modify the core again so substantially that it would break functioning of modifications.

Dev told me they won't expect plugins to break, perhaps a few classes have changed and some plugins use these, but overal it shouldn't be a problem.

Should have really said "going from normal, to a bit of OOP code". A large majority of vBulletin is still written procedurally.

P.S. I realise this will probably get me banned for constant pestering but... When will someone add the extra 3.5.x editor buttons to the "Classic Style" images folder?

You can already find out what's included if you do a bit of reading; some of 3.6's features have already been posted. ;)

Though, the developers have gone silent on stuff like that lately again... so I would assume they're working on something. :p

Did you read this one (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1115460&postcount=4) by Scott? My guess it would be vBlog.

I don't really care what they do as long as it's as good as what's gone before.

I have only just moved from 3.0 to 3.5, as I run many hacks. It took me AGES to get a test board up to the required standard of modifications, and I hated having to do it and generally whinged an awful lot on vb.org about the compatibility issues.

However now I've bitten the bullet and done it I love it and consider 3.0 to be decidedly old fashioned! It was hard work to change over, but worth it.

Yep, a while ago. I don't miss many posts. :p

The plugin system makes ugrading and managing modifications much easier, eh? :D

Probably some time in the future, .. just sit and wait. We don't have an ETA (the support staff at least).

It certainly does. In fact it feels like I'm cheating!

I won't go into the complete 'mare I had trying to actually build the upgrade on a test board. Sheesh! It was actually harder than when I first migrated from XMB to vB 2 some years ago.

I'm confused with the newest update. Do we update if we are running on version 3.5.4?

Colin F
Tue 25th Apr '06, 3:31pm
That's actually a maintenance/security release for 3.0.x, so it doesn't affect any of our customers that are running 3.5.x.

I doubt it was that difficult... Create a dump via the shell with the mysql dump, mv the file to your test folder, in the shell type cp /home/site/forums /home/site/test/ and update the config.php file.

Oh no that bit was easy...you're talking about creating a mirror site...I did that ok.

I am talking about taking that mirror, running the upgrade and then adding in all the hacks I need to give me roughly what I had before....that has been hideously tricky, especially where I have manually altered custom code to my own liking.

I have spent literally four months on it...admittedly not solidly all day every day since I work. But it has been a long hard slog. And even once I actually upgraded the live site, it took another week of tweaks and changes to get it perfect.

It amazes me that someone would ask for a pirated copy of software on the official software site. I'm going to ask Bill Gates if he'll burn me a copy of Vista!
