View Full Version : So.. I think my monitor bit the dust

For awhile (at least a year+) my ViewSonic A90f+ would oddly resize itself and look funny, I shruged it off for a long time. Tonight while playing wow it started flickering and resizing and having a weird picture (brighter than normal and totally disfugured). We wiped on the boss, so I shut down and disconnected thinking something might be lose(I did some cleaning inside and unhooked everything earlier). Afte ri unpluged it, it said it still had a single, but was grainy like static on a tv almost, with nothing pluged in, after plugging it back into my pc, it was just as grainy but darker.. not by much. It effects the entire display, including the OSD.

Its more than out of a warrenty as it seems my monitor is at least back from 2004 (when I was building this machine). The warrenty was only good for 1 year :(.

On the upside I've got a Dell LCD monitor here to keep my time and work while I figure out what I want to do for a new monitor.

If its just the cable, is it hard for an authorized serivce center to fix it? assuming one is close?
Would I be better off just buying a new monitor? If so, any recomendations? I'm not overly picky but I really must have 1600x1200, in anything above 17". LCD or CRT won't matter much to me.

I really like view sonic, and I hope this monitor was a fluke, but im open to all suggestions.

It'd probably cost you more to get it repaired than to buy a new one.

I had already figured as much :/

Now I'm just looking for suggestions mostly

I was trying to do some gaming today, and it was sad to be gaming at less than 1600x1200 :(

My Sony 17 200sf bought December 12, 1996 (only monitor) still is working (as it's my only monitor). I paid $1,125 Canadian for it back then (retailed for like $1,300+). Wonder why it still is working so well (other then the flickering spit it has once in a while since 99').

I am using two 19" Viewsonic X912's. They're pretty nifty, but the resolution is 1280 x 1024 maximum (I think) :D

I'm hoping the issues I had with view sonic were just a bad monitor from bestbuy.

Looking at the graphic serries one it looks high quaility and has a better range of support.

Personally I wouldn't buy viewsonic. Sorry to hear your monitor's dying. No warranty anymore? Some offer 3 to 5 years.

Zachery
Sun 23rd Apr '06, 2:41am
Mine was one of those weird ones, decent features but no long term support (1 year only and not eligable for extension).

If you wouldn't buy a view sonic floris what would you buy? I don't really want a LCD as the cost is more than I want to pay and I can get a simliar CRT for less with more.

I have always used the iiyama & sony monitors simply because their colors are just brilliant. iiyama also has quite good support. I had a fault aligned monitor and without any trouble I could come over to their workplace and check out their repair and alternatives, etc. I have enjoyed my 514 master pro 22" one a long time, and even after so many years I could hardly get rid of it (mentally), but could sell it for quite a bit. Because quality was still excellent. These days I wouldn't dare going back to CRT anymore, TFT all the way for me. Especially with those nice 24" dell monitors.

If money isn't an issue I would probably have purchased EIZO or Iiyama.

Sony doesn't make CRTs anymore, And I personally game alot so a CRT is not much of an option for me. The colors in my dell lcd are not nearly as vibrant or clear in comparsion to my monitor that died.

I can only find Iiyama's in the 19in area that all must be shipped to me. which is not a prime option. Ontop of that their monitors don't quite look as nice. (reminds me of my old mac).

Why would you suggest to stay away from ViewSonic though?

I don't really get it sorry ...

I thought you meant with LCD a TFT monitor.

Its not, and I've already heard that thing is junk for gaming, like video games support that max resolution :p

Altho I wouldn't mind having one of those for a TV :D

If I would to buy a 2100 tft screen like the 30" from dell, I would also need a new video card, which means I need a new motherboard, which means I need new ram and cpu, which means I basically spend 3500 .. which means I might as well buy a new dell system and get the 30" with it :p

Get the 24" one zachery :) Kier has it and I've seen it: It's amazing.

Meh, I'm not intrested in a 24" LCD really, they don't suite my needs right now. Altho it wouldn't be that bad as far as deskspace goes.

I don't like the fact I have to buy a 20" LCD to get 1600x1200 when a 19" CRT monitor (Which is 2 inches smaller almost) does the same thing at a higher refresh rate, and has less ghosting, and costs less money.

Floris
Mon 24th Apr '06, 6:38am
refresh rate on TFT doesn't matter, they either do 60 or 75 .. you really can't tell the difference.

The ghosting part is where it comes in play, if you're really worried go for the < 12 ones.

Zachery
Mon 24th Apr '06, 6:45am
I'm also worried about resolution size, and I can't get a LCD/TFT monitor that does 1600x1200 without going above a 20+". Which I find to be a bother (as they get costly then). Of corse I know that my laptop which is 15" does 1600x1200 awsomely.

Floris
Mon 24th Apr '06, 6:48am
When I was looking for a 19" that did 1280x1024 i only found 19" that did 1600x1200 ..

EIZO is a very nice manufacturer of TFT screens ... I am only using them ...

Well obviously the solution is to buy two 7900GTXs, SLI them, and you can run any game you want at 2560 x 1600. Look at it this way: the video cards will still be cheaper than the monitor.

Floris
Mon 24th Apr '06, 8:35pm
Samsung is pretty good and has the 9xx series with 1280x1024 & 1600x1200 on the 19". Their latest Samsung 19" 940BF TFT has 2ms response time. I wonder if you even see ghosting.

But otherwise iiyama, or if money isn't an issue more EIZO, but these days I just get Dell. They're amazing. And the same hardware inside as the Apple ones, so doesn't matter which one you buy (dells're cheaper).

Get a decent TFT and take it back if you really don't like it. I can't believe you won't.

No, you have to pay it yourself and write it down as costs to do your work on your tax form.

Zachery
Wed 26th Apr '06, 12:11am
I can do that anyway :p

Floris

Showdown time.

What's the budget?
What size you want?
Do you want a TFT or CRT?
What brands do you want to pick from?
What specs for the TFT or CRT you require? (resolution, ghosting, etc)

Zachery
Wed 26th Apr '06, 10:33am
200-300 preferably, I can do 500 if nessary
19"+
No specific brand loyality
I'd prefer CRT, but I'm not agasint an LCD that will do 1600x1200 or better @19"

Kier
Thu 27th Apr '06, 5:38am
Call me stupid but a 19" CRT will only have 18" visible, so you'd need a 20" CRT to match the visible screen size of a 19" TFT... Why not just go for a 20" TFT, as they all run 1600 x 1200?

Thu 27th Apr '06, 6:49am
I don't know of many, if any, 19in LCDs that do 1600x1200. I think you might have to bump up to a 20in panel. There are several very nice 20in Samsung LCDs for $450.

If you return a monitor with a dead pixel, they're morely likely to throw a brick through your car window then send you a replacement or refund.

Rephrased: their ratings suck, and for good reason. I certainly won't buy from them again. http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2107.html . I mean look, they're actually going down over time.
