Ok so today our server is running super slow. I look at the bandwidth meter and it seems like we are running at 9.9mb/s. And our server config says we have a 10mb/s switch. So I'm assuming our limiting factor is this switch? So i'm going to ask the server company to put in a 100mb/s switch. However they are quite unhelpful, and combined with the fact that I don'thave much knowledge in this area i'm getting a little worried about if i'm on the right track here.

Basicly I asked about upgrading to 100mb/s switch and he said "OK but make sure your rc.conf is set to handle 100mb/s full duplex".

First, does anyone know what string to put into rc.conf to let it handle the 100mb/s.

Second, do you guys think i'm barking up the right tree in assuming a simple switch change to 100mb/s will fix things ?

Thanks!!

Well I'm not really sure at all to be honest.. here is a real time graph my dedicated server company provides.. does it seem like we are hitting some kind of 10mb/s switch limit ?

Attached is a .GIF of it..

Look at your past usages... are you sure your server is not under attack?

might be, but basicly today is a big news day for our site with much higher then normal traffic for our site due to some new pics out.. so we are serving alot of big pictures (wallpaper size) to a TON of ppl.. so it makes sense why we have the traffic.. On top of that traffic we could very well be beng attacked, I do have mod_evasive and I hope that covers me. But regardless if I wanted to up my bandwidth so the site loads faster, do you think going to the 100mb/s switch would relieve the congestion in getting to my site ?

If so, have any experience with BSD and rc.conf and getting it to recognize a new 100mb/s switch at full duplex ?

thanks!!

You might want to look into offloading the images on your server to another cheap hosting account thats just for mass media.

I hear there are several companys who have these plans.

And No, no expirence with BSD, can't stand it much.

100Mbit would help you use you total bandwidth much faster, but it would help as well.

Ok thanks, the help is much much appreciated! Sometimes I wish i knew more about BSD :)

I would suggest getting somewhere seperate from your main server for "images", something limited by "speed" (not by gb / month) so that even if you are hitting the limit constantly, you wont get billed extreme rates after you go over x gb, it will just slow your users downloads down... Other than that, I'd suggest finding a hosting company with a clue :P

honestly if your forum community and site are growing this much, i think time to move to a better web host to accomodate for the growth - a web host who's more knowledgeable in this area would help :)
